Wan Chai Heritage Trail
The Wan Chai Heritage Trail () is a walking trail in Hong Kong. It was launched on 27 September 2009 and is two hours in duration. It was formed by the Old Wan Chai Revitalisation Initiatives Special Committee (OWCRISC) established by the Development Bureau to promote the local culture, history and architectural style of Wan Chai District. At present the trail features 15 sites, including the Blue House, Wan Chai Market, Nam Koo Terrace and the Starstreet Precinct. Streamline Moderne
Streamline Moderne is an international style of Art Deco architecture and design that emerged in the 1930s. Inspired by aerodynamic design, it emphasized curving forms, long horizontal lines, and sometimes nautical elements. Heritage Conservation In Hong Kong
This article details the history and status of Heritage conservation in Hong Kong, as well as the role of various stakeholders. An indication of the size of the built heritage in Hong Kong is given by a territory-wide survey conducted by the Antiquities and Monuments Office (AMO) between 1996 and 2000, which recorded some 8,800 buildings. Gresson Street
Gresson Street () is a street in the Wan Chai area of Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong. It connects Queen's Road East (south) to Johnston Road (north). Market The open market of Gresson Street is part of the Wan Chai Heritage Trail. The market began in the 1950s. Stalls sell wet and dry goods. History Gresson Street was opened around 1909 on Marine Lots 29 and 30, when the lots were redeveloped by Hongkong Land. The street was named after William Jardine Gresson (1869–1934), a partner of Jardine, Matheson & Co. from 1901 to 1910. A noted shootout, the "Siege of Gresson Street", took place here on 22 January 1918, as a gang of armed-robbers were trapped while raiding a tenement at No.6 Gresson Street. Four or five policemen and two robbers were shot dead and an additional robber and six policemen were wounded. Hung Shing Temple, Wan Chai
The Hung Shing Temple in Wan Chai, Hong Kong is one of the forty-two temples dedicated to Hung Shing in the Hong Kong. Location The temple is located at Nos. 129–131 Queen's Road East, Wan Chai. Tai Wong Street West and Tai Wong Street East intersect with Queen's Road East across the street from the temple. The two streets derive their name from the temple, as "Tai Wong" is an alternate name for Hung Shing. Cross Street
Cross Street (Chinese: 克罗士街; ms, Jalan Silang) is a street in Singapore starting from Shenton Way in Downtown Core and ending at the junction of South Bridge Road in Chinatown which is in Outram Planning Area which then becomes Upper Cross Street. At the start of the street, it houses Telok Ayer Market (more commonly known as Lau Pa Sat). A number of landmarks are located on the street including Far East Square and China Square Central. Old Wan Chai Post Office
The Old Wan Chai Post Office is the oldest surviving post office building in Hong Kong. It is situated at No. 221 Queen's Road East, at the junction with Wan Chai Gap Road. History The building was erected between 1912 and 1913, and opened on 1 March 1915 as the Wan Chai Post Office. It is not known whether the building was originally built and designed for such purpose. The post office ceased to operate in 1992, after having served the Wan Chai community continuously for 77 years. Features The Old Wan Chai Post Office is an L-shaped building. It is a simple pitched-roof structure with attractive gable ends and mouldings. Wan Chai Pak Tai Temple
The Wan Chai Pak Tai Temple, also known as Yuk Hui Kung, is located on Lung On Street in Wan Chai, Hong Kong. It was built by locals in 1863. The temple is dedicated to Pak Tai, a martial deity, and houses a Ming Dynasty statue of Pak Tai built in 1603, as well as a number of antique bells cast in 1863. It is decorated with a large number of lotus lanterns. The Temple consists of the main building and two annexes. The main building is dedicated to the worship of Pak Tai. Ship Street, Hong Kong
Ship Street () is a street in Wan Chai, Hong Kong. It starts from Johnston Road, crosses Queen's Road East and goes uphill southward and reaches Kennedy Road. Part of the street is ladders and much of the century-old buildings are abandoned. Locals often refer to these buildings as the "Ghost House". History The story of Ship Street began in 1910s. Johnston Road () is a major road in Wan Chai on the Hong Kong Island of Hong Kong. Location Johnston Road spans from the junction with Heard Street, Hennessy Road and Stewart Road on its east, towards another junction with Hennessy Road and Queensway on its west near , in where it is known locally as .
