Walterdale Bridge
The Walterdale Bridge is a through arch bridge across the North Saskatchewan River in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It replaced the previous Walterdale Bridge in 2017. The new bridge has three lanes for northbound vehicular traffic and improved pedestrian and cyclist crossings. Old Walterdale Bridge (1913–2017) The previous Walterdale Bridge (formerly called the 105 Street Bridge, renamed in 1967) was a steel grating-decked truss bridge. It was built in 1913 by the Dominion Bridge Company and was named after John Walter, an early settler who ran a ferry at this approximate location. The neighbourhood Walterdale at this location was also named after John Walter. Demolition of the 1913 bridge began in October 2017 after the decking, sidewalks, and utilities had been removed, and was completed by the end of that year. John Walter (businessman)
John Walter (August 12, 1849 – December 25, 1920) was a Canadian business entrepreneur. He was an early pioneer and settler in Fort Edmonton and made contributions to its development from a fur trade post to a major city in Western Canada. Life John Walter was born in 1849 in Orkney, Scotland. As his family had some connection to Canada through the Hudson’s Bay Company, he signed a five-year contract as a York boat builder and carpenter with HBC and arrived at Fort Edmonton on December 24, 1870. During those five years Walter contributed to many early Edmonton buildings, including the McDougall Methodist Church. When his HBC contract ended, he settled in the south bank of the North Saskatchewan River which was outside the Fort and began his own boat building and ferry operation across the river. James MacDonald Bridge
The James MacDonald Bridge is a bridge that spans the North Saskatchewan River in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Construction of the bridge began in the early 1960s and was completed in October 1971. The bridge was named after city engineer James MacDonald. This span was designed to carry the 5 westbound collector lanes of the south leg of the "downtown freeway loop", as conceived under the "METS" design study. This explains the "overbuilt" appearance of the still existing interchange system on the east side of the North Saskatchewan River and the truncated appearance of the ramps at the east end of the bridge. Most of these ramp alignments were sited as temporary connectors under the phased construction planning, yet continue to serve in their original state. High Level Bridge (Edmonton)
The High Level Bridge is a bridge that spans the North Saskatchewan River in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. History Located next to the Alberta Legislature Building, the bridge linked the communities of Edmonton and Strathcona, which became one city in 1912. It was designed from the outset to accommodate rail, streetcar, two-way automobile, and pedestrian traffic. The original bridge design included three tracks on the upper deck: The middle track was for CPR trains, and the two outer tracks were for streetcars. The bridge was built by John Gunn and Sons of Winnipeg, who previously built other bridges for Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR).
