Walter Simon (sinologist)
Ernest Julius Walter Simon, (10 June 189322 February 1981) was a German sinologist and librarian. He was born in Berlin and lived there, being educated at the University of Berlin, until he fled the Nazis to London in 1934, where he spent all the rest of his life except for brief periods as a visiting professor in various countries, teaching Chinese at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London from 1947 to 1960. He made great contributions to historical Chinese phonology and Sino-Tibetan linguistics. As a sinologist, he had a Chinese name, Ximen Huade (西門華德, Xīmén Huádé). Walter Carl Simon
Lieutenant Walter Carl Simon (1890–1971) was a World War I flying ace credited with eight aerial victories. Biography Flying a Bristol F.2 Fighter for the British, he and his observer scored five victories on the single day of 30 July 1918; he thus became the first American "ace in a day". When the war ended, he went to Lima, Peru, where he was promoted to the rank of 1st Lieutenant and became Vice-director of the Naval Flying School at Ancon, headed by Captain Juan Swayne Leguia, former RAF pilot in World War I and son of Augusto B. Leguia, president of Peru. Walter Simon (philanthropist)
Walter Simon (30 April 1857 – 1 April 1920) was a German banker, councillor and philanthropist active in Königsberg and Tübingen. Life Simon, the second son of Königsberg banker Moritz Simon and Hedwig Simon, attended Altstadt Gymnasium as a youth and then studied law, medicine, and philosophy at the University of Tübingen and the Albertina, the University of Königsberg. After graduation he worked as a banker in his native Königsberg. Until 1 April 1901 he was also a city councillor, focusing on relief for the poor and public education. Simon received an honorary professorship from the Albertina in 1899 and was accorded a '' Geheime Kommerzienrat'' (privy commerce councilor) of the German Empire. Simon was also named an honorary citizen of Königsberg in 1908, during the centennial of the 1808 reforming '' Städteordnung'' of Stein. Walter Simon was a World War II German spy. He successfully completed three missions in England. In 1939 he was arrested by MI5, spent three months in prison, then deported. In June 1940 he landed by U-boat in neutral Ireland on a naval intelligence mission but was captured that same day and sentenced to three years in jail. With the Battle of Britain about to begin following the fall of France, the arrival of a German spy on the Dingle Peninsula in June 1940 sparked enormous security concerns both in Ireland and the United Kingdom. Background Walter Simon was trained at the Abwehr branch in Hamburg, who were responsible for subversive activities against the United Kingdom. Walter Augustus Simon (June 18, 1916 – August 28, 1979) was an American painter, teacher, foreign service officer, and cultural affairs officer. Having a career that spanned over five decades, Simon is best known for his abstract oil on canvas paintings, specifically 715 Washington St., which portrayed his apartment building in the Greenwich Village area of Manhattan that also acted as an artist salon. Walt Simon
Walter John Simon (December 1, 1939 – October 10, 1997) was an American basketball player. A 6'6" small forward from Benedict College, he played seven seasons (1967–1974) in the American Basketball Association for the New Jersey Americans/New York Nets and Kentucky Colonels. He appeared in the 1969 ABA All-Star Game, and he scored 6,414 career points. Simon is the only alumnus of Benedict College to play professionally at the ABA or NBA level. Initially undrafted by the NBA out of college, Simon starred for six seasons in the minor league Eastern Professional Basketball League for the Allentown Jets before moving to the ABA.
