Walter Scheib
Walter Stanley Scheib III (May 3, 1954 – June 13, 2015) was an American chef who was White House Executive Chef from 1994 until 2005. Early life and work Early life Scheib was born on May 3, 1954, in Oakland, California, to Walter S. Scheib Jr. and his wife, Jean Scheib. His father worked for the Atomic Energy Commission, and his mother was an accountant. The Scheibs moved to Bethesda, Maryland, when Walter was a young boy. Scheib's mother was a devotee of French cooking long before it became popular in the United States, often making paella and bouillabaisse. She also cooked Spanish cuisine, and taught Walter to appreciate unusual flavor combinations. Scheib's favorite television programs were ''The Galloping Gourmet'' with Graham Kerr and ''The French Chef'' with Julia Child. A sous-chef is a chef who is second in command in a kitchen; the person ranking next after the head chef, usually the more hands on manager with regards to training staff and organising the kitchen. Duties and functions The sous-chef has many responsibilities, because the executive chef has a more overarching role. Jon Hill (chef)
Jon Hill ( 1954) is an American chef who was White House Executive Chef from October 1, 1987, to January 7, 1988. He was the first American-born chef to serve in the capacity. Early life and education Hill was born in Spokane, Washington, about 1954 to Victor M. Hill, a chef and instructor of hotel-motel and restaurant management at Spokane Community College. His grandfather was also a chef. Hill fell in love with fine cooking at the age of 16. After graduating from high school, he studied restaurant management under his father at Spokane Community College in 1974, then transferred to Portland Community College in 1976. Henry Haller
Henry Haller (January 10, 1923 – November 7, 2020) was a Swiss American chef who served as Executive Chef of the White House from 1966 to 1987. Haller's death was announced on November 9, 2020. Early life Haller was born in Altdorf, Switzerland, in 1923. He was of French descent on his mother's side and German descent on his father's. His father was manager of a factory and loved food, and as a young boy Haller loved to cook. His mother planted a large kitchen garden, and as a child Haller would fetch fresh vegetables from the garden and watch as she cooked them. It was his father who encouraged him to be a chef.
