Walter Reimann
Walter Reimann (2 June 1887 – 8 November 1936) was a German painter and art director. He was an Expressionist and member of the group of artists associated with Zurich magazine, Der Sturm. He worked on the production design of a number of films during his career, the most important of which was The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Along with fellow members of the ''Der Sturm'' group, Walter Röhrig and Hermann Warm, Reimann created skewed, dreamlike sets that distorted geometry and indicated the interior states of mind of the characters. ''The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari'' was an international success and the production design has had a lasting influence on other movies - especially in the horror and film noir genres - since then. The Caligari design is echoed in the sets produced by Universal Studios for their series of classic monster movies in the 1930s. A Daughter Of Destiny
''Alraune'' is a 1928 German silent science fiction horror film directed by Henrik Galeen and starring Brigitte Helm in which a prostitute is artificially inseminated with the semen of a hanged man. The story is based upon the legend of Alraune. In this version, the blasphemous sexual union causes the progeny (a daughter) to grow to adulthood quickly, behave in a sexually promiscuous fashion and cause the men who fall in love with her nothing but hardship, heartache and financial ruin, if not death. Plot A wealthy Professor specializing in genetics is ambitious to conduct an experiment with a woman of "low social status", by impregnating her with a mandrake. The plant is believed by legend to sprout from the semen of hanged prisoners. He instructs his young nephew, Franz, to obtain a woman from the "scum of society". It covers the origin and mechanics of the Solar System, gravitation, the stars, and the nature of galaxies. The film is a prime example of the early German "Kulturfilm", which are regarded as predecessors of the modern film documentary. It features a large variety of special effects and animations, as well as fantastical depictions of travel around the Solar System and to the stars. Prints were color-tinted and color-toned for effect. The film has been reconstructed in 2008 by Munich Film Archive using material from the National Audiovisual Institute (Finland) in Helsinki and the Deutsche Kinemathek in Berlin.
