Walter Patterson Filling Station
The Walter Patterson Filling Station is a historic automotive service station building on United States Route 65 in central Clinton, Arkansas. It is a small single-story brick building, with a steeply pitched gable roof. The front of the building is symmetrical, with a central entrance flanked by square single-pane display windows, and a cross-gable above the entrance. Built in 1936, it is the only gas station from that period to survive in the city, and is a good example of commercial English Revival architecture. United States Route 65
U.S. Route 65 (US 65) is a north–south United States highway in the southern and midwestern United States. The southern terminus of the route is at U.S. Route 425 in Clayton, Louisiana. The northern terminus is at Interstate 35 just south of Interstate 90 in Albert Lea, Minnesota. Parts of its modern route in Iowa and historic route in Minnesota follow the old Jefferson Highway. Route description Louisiana U.S. 65 begins in Clayton, Louisiana and proceeds northward to Waterproof, St. Joseph, and Newellton, all in Tensas Parish. At Newellton, it intersects with Louisiana State Highway 4 coming from the west. In Tallulah, it intersects Interstate 20, and approximately 30 miles north of this intersection it enters Arkansas. Clinton is the county seat of Van Buren County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,602 at the 2010 census, making it the most populous city in the county (reclaiming the distinction from the resort community of Fairfield Bay). The city was named for DeWitt Clinton, the New York governor who built the Erie Canal; he had also been a U.S. Senator from New York. The Clinton Commercial Historic District encompasses the historic commercial center of Clinton, Arkansas. It encompasses a roughly triangular area, bounded by Main Street, Moss Street, and United States Route 65B, extending northwest along 65B as far as Oak Street. This area's development began in the mid-19th century, but most of its buildings date from the first half of the 20th century, representing a diversity of architectural styles popular in that time period. English Revival Architecture
Tudor Revival architecture (also known as mock Tudor in the UK) first manifested itself in domestic architecture in the United Kingdom in the latter half of the 19th century. Based on revival of aspects that were perceived as Tudor architecture, in reality it usually took the style of English vernacular architecture of the Middle Ages that had survived into the Tudor period. The style later became an influence elsewhere, especially the British colonies. For example, in New Zealand, the architect Francis Petre adapted the style for the local climate. Walter Patterson House
The Walter Patterson House is a historic house at 1800 United States Route 65 in Clinton, Arkansas. It is a single-story stone structure, built out of local fieldstone with cream-colored brick trim. Its gabled roof has extended eaves with exposed rafters in the Craftsman style. The house was built in 1946, its stonework done by the regionally prominent mason Silas Owens Sr. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.
