Walter Jardine
Walter Lacy Jardine (6 May 1884 – 24 February 1970) was an Australian commercial artist, known for his fine draftsmanship. Biography Jardine was born in Macdonaldtown, Sydney, the second son of Alfred Henry Jardine (died before 1913), and his wife Amy Mary Jardine, née Lacy (died 20 April 1936). When quite young he was apprenticed to newspaper artist J. H. Leonard, and later studied at an art school conducted by J. S. Watkins. By age 17 he was a regular contributing artist to ''The Australian Star'' newspaper. In October 1910 '' The Lone Hand'' published his pen and ink drawing, "Tennis girl". In 1923 he left for New York, where he become known for his detailed drawings on scraper-board, and illustrated William Randolph Hearst’s ''Cosmopolitan'', ''Good Housekeeping'' and ''Motor'' magazines, the American Legion's magazine and other cover art and commercial work, making more money than he could ever earn in Australia. Macdonaldtown, New South Wales
Macdonaldtown is an urban place in Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is 4 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district, adjacent to the suburbs of Newtown, Eveleigh and Erskineville. Macdonaldtown is part of the local government area of the City of Sydney and informally part of the region of the Inner West. The locality is around Macdonaldtown railway station, on the Inner West line of the Sydney Trains network. History The area was originally part of a grant made to Irishman Nicholas Devine, who arrived in 1790 as the first principal superintendent of convicts. Devine built his homestead near the corner of Erskineville Road and George Street. An error about the naming of Macdonaldtown is often repeated in publications - viz. King Street is a street in the Sydney central business district in New South Wales, Australia. It stretches from King Street Wharf and Lime Street near Darling Harbour in the west, to Queens Square at St James railway station in the east. John McDouall Stuart
John McDouall Stuart (7 September 18155 June 1866), often referred to as simply "McDouall Stuart", was a Scottish explorer and one of the most accomplished of all Australia's inland explorers. Stuart led the first successful expedition to traverse the Australian mainland from south to north and return, through the centre of the continent. His experience and the care he showed for his team ensured he never lost a man, despite the harshness of the country he encountered. The explorations of Stuart eventually resulted in the 1863 annexation of a huge area of country to the Government of South Australia. This area became known as the Northern Territory. In 1911 the Commonwealth of Australia assumed responsibility for that area. In 1871–72 the Australian Overland Telegraph Line was constructed along Stuart's route. The Postmaster-General's Department (PMG) was a department of the Australian federal government, established at Federation in 1901, whose responsibilities included the provision of postal and telegraphic services throughout Australia. It was abolished in December 1975 and replaced by the Postal and Telecommunications Department. Tooheys
Tooheys is a brewery in the suburb of Lidcombe, in Sydney, Australia. It produces beers and ciders under the ''Tooheys'' and ''Hahn Brewery'' trademarks, and is part of the Lion beverages group which was acquired by the Japanese Kirin Company in 2009. History Tooheys dates from 1869, when John Thomas Toohey (an Irish immigrant to Melbourne) obtained his brewing licence. Toohey and his brother James Matthew ran pubs in Melbourne (The Limerick Arms and The Great Britain) before moving to Sydney in the 1860s. They commenced brewing Tooheys Black Old Ale in a brewery in the area of present-day Darling Harbour. By 1875, demand for their beer had soared and they established The Standard Brewery in inner-city Surry Hills. Tooth & Co
Tooth and Co was the major brewer of beer in New South Wales, Australia. The company owned a large brewery on Broadway in Sydney from 1835 until 1985, known as the Kent Brewery. It was historically one of Australia's oldest companies, having been established as a partnership in 1835 and listed on the then Sydney Stock Exchange in July 1961. The brand has undergone a revival in 2015. The Royal Agricultural Society of New South Wales was founded on 5 July 1822, when a group of Sydney's leading citizens formed the Agricultural Society of NSW, and is "a not-for-profit organisation committed to supporting agricultural development and rural communities in Australia." The society has been responsible for holding the Sydney Royal Easter Show since 1823. History Eleven officers were elected and the Society staged its first Show at Parramatta in 1823.
