Walter J.C. Murray
Walter John Campbell Murray was born in Seaford, East Sussex 20 August 1900. During the First World War he spent time at sea as a radio officer in the Mercantile Marine and later served in the R.A.F. He was a journalist in London for a short time before moving to Horam in Sussex to spend a year gathering and marketing wild herbs. Murray later became a schoolmaster, and in 1926 founded his own independent co-educational school of which he remained headmaster for forty years. Throughout his life he was a keen student of natural history, and this took him to many remote corners and islands of the United Kingdom. Murray was well known as a nature photographer, as well as a radio and television broadcaster.Dustjacket biography ''Romney Marsh'' by Walter J.C. Seaford, East Sussex
Seaford is a town in East Sussex, England, east of Newhaven and west of Eastbourne.OS Explorer map Eastbourne and Beachy Head Scale: 1:25 000. Publisher:Ordnance Survey – Southampton B2 edition. In the Middle Ages, Seaford was one of the main ports serving Southern England, but the town's fortunes declined due to coastal sedimentation silting up its harbour and persistent raids by French pirates. The coastal confederation of Cinque Ports in the mediaeval period consisted of forty-two towns and villages; Seaford was included under the "Limb" of Hastings. Between 1350 and 1550, the French burned down the town several times. In the 16th century, the people of Seaford were known as the "cormorants" or "shags" because of their enthusiasm for looting ships wrecked in the bay. Horam
Horam is a village, electoral ward and civil parish in the Wealden District of East Sussex, situated south of Heathfield.OS Explorer map Eastbourne and Beachy Head Scale: 1:25 000. History The village of Horam grew up around the railway station and was formerly known as 'Horeham' or 'Horeham Road'. The railway station (closed in 1965 under the Beeching Axe) was originally named ‘Horeham Road ''for'' Waldron’. In 1891 it became ‘Horeham Road ''and'' Waldron’. In 1925 the village changed its name to Horam, although the station persevered with ‘Waldron and Horeham Road’ until 1935. The dialling code for Horam is still listed as 'Horam Road'.
