Walter H. Longton
Walter Hunt Longton (10 September 1892 – 6 June 1927) was an English flying ace of the First World War, credited with 11 confirmed aerial victories. Most unusually for a British or Commonwealth ace, all his victories resulted in the destruction of his foe. Postwar, he became very involved in air racing, aviation exhibitions, and various competitive air events while continuing his military aviation career. First World War On 29 April 1916, Private Longton was commissioned a temporary second lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps (RFC). On 12 July 1916, he was appointed a flying officer in the RFC; such appointments customarily were made at the end of a pilot's training. By mid-1918, he was posted to 85 Squadron as a Royal Aircraft Factory SE.5a pilot. On 3 June 1918, he was awarded the Air Force Cross by King George V. Whiston, Merseyside
Whiston is a town and civil parish within the Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley in Merseyside, England. Previously recorded within the historic county of Lancashire, it is located east of Liverpool. The population was 13,629 at the 2001 Census, increasing to 14,263 at the 2011 Census. A new village, Halsnead Garden Village, was approved with government support in 2017 and will be located in the Halsnead area of the town. The new village will contain over 1,500 houses, a primary school, a country park, and various community and leisure facilities. Construction is estimated to cost around £270 million. Aerial Derby
The Aerial Derby was an air race in the United Kingdom sponsored by the '' Daily Mail'' in which the competitors flew a circuit around London. It was first held in 1912, with subsequent races in 1913 and 1914. Suspended during the First World War, the event was revived in 1919 with a "Victory Aerial Derby". Further races were held in 1920, 1921,1922 and 1923. Although a race was scheduled for 1924 there were insufficient entries, and the event was cancelled and not held again. 1912 The first race, held on Saturday 8 June consisted of a single circuit of an course, starting and finishing at Hendon Aerodrome with control points at Kempton Park, Esher, Purley and Purfleet. Hendon
Hendon is an urban area in the Borough of Barnet, North-West London northwest of Charing Cross. Hendon was an ancient manor and parish in the county of Middlesex and a former borough, the Municipal Borough of Hendon; it has been part of Greater London since 1965. Hendon falls almost entirely within the NW4 postcode, while the West Hendon part falls in NW9.
