Walter Henry Erskine, Earl of Mar and of Kellie (17 December 1839 – 16 September 1888) was a Scottish peer. Biography Walter Henry was the son of Walter Coningsby Erskine, 12th Earl of Kellie and Elise Youngson. He succeeded as 13th Earl of Kellie on his father's death in 1872. The title Earl of Kellie or Kelly is a title in the Peerage of Scotland, created in 1619 for Sir Thomas Erskine, who was Captain of the Guard and Groom of the Stool for James VI. It is named after Barony of Kellie in Fife, Scotland. Since 1875, it has been held jointly with the Earldom of Mar (1565 creation). The family seat is Hilton Farm, near Alloa, Clackmannanshire. History The Earldom of Kellie was united with the Earldom of Mar in 1835, when the 26th Earl of Mar became also the 11th Earl of Kellie. At the death of that Earl in 1866, the Earldom of Kellie and the family's estates passed to Walter Erskine, the cousin of the late Earl, and his heir-male. The first creation of the earldom is currently held by Margaret of Mar, 31st Countess of Mar, who is also clan chief of Clan Mar. Walter John Francis Erskine, 12th Earl of Mar and 14th Earl of Kellie (29 August 1865 – 3 June 1955) was a Scottish nobleman. Biography The eldest son of Walter Erskine, 11th Earl of Mar and Mary Anne Forbes, he was educated at Eton and served as a 2nd lieutenant and then lieutenant in the Scots Guards from 1887–92. Sir William Augustus Forbes Erskine (30 October 1871 – 17 July 1952) was the first British ambassador to the Republic of Poland. Career William Erskine, second son of Walter Erskine, 11th Earl of Mar, was educated at Eton College and Magdalen College, Oxford. He joined the Foreign Office in 1894 and served at Buenos Aires, Teheran, Rome and Stockholm where he was chargé d'affaires in 1913. Colonel Sir Michael Robert Shaw-Stewart, 7th Baronet (26 November 1826 – 10 December 1903) was a British baronet and Conservative Party politician. He sat in the House of Commons from 1855 to 1865. He was the son of Sir Michael Shaw-Stewart, 6th Baronet. A keen cricketer, Shaw-Stewart played a single first-class cricket match for the Marylebone Cricket Club in 1850. He was said to be a staunch supporter of the Renfrewshire fox hunt. In May 1855, he was elected at an unopposed by-election as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Renfrewshire. He was re-elected in 1857 and 1859, and held the seat until his defeat at the 1865 general election. Lieutenant-Colonel Archibald Campbell, 1st Baron Blythswood, (22 February 1835 – 8 July 1908) was a Scottish soldier, Tory politician, scientist and Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Scotland. Life Born Archibald Campbell Douglas (he dropped Douglas from his name in 1838) in Florence, Tuscany, he was the son of Archibald Campbell, 17th Laird of Mains, until 1838 known as Archibald Douglas. Campbell joined the 79th Highlanders at the age of 16 and fought in the Crimean War in 1855, where he was severely wounded. He transferred to the Scots Fusilier Guards and rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.
