Walter Blake (politician)
Sir Walter Blake, (bef. 1672–May 1748), 6th Bt., was a minor Irish aristocrat and politician from County Galway. Biography Blake was the son of Sir Thomas Blake and Maria French. In October 1686, Walter Blake succeeded to the title of 6th Baronet Blake of Menlough. During the Williamite war in Ireland, he was a captain in Colonel Dillon's Regiment of Foot of King James II's Irish Army. Blake was Member of Parliament for Galway County in the Patriot Parliament of 1689. He was the first Roman Catholic of distinction to join William of Orange's forces, where he raised and maintained a regiment at his own expense. Blake lived in Menlough Menlough () is a village in northeast County Galway in Ireland. Menlough
Menlough () is a village in northeast County Galway in Ireland. Located 35 km from Galway, 27 km from Tuam, 30 km from Ballinasloe, and 20 km from Athenry, it forms part of the civil parish of Killascobe. History Historically, Menlough was in the Barony of Hymany which was a stronghold of the O'Mannion clan. The ruins of an O'Mannion castle are located in the fields behind the grotto in the centre of the village. Another O'Mannion castle in the parish is better known as there are more extensive ruins. This second ruin is known as Garbally Castle. It is visible to travellers from Galway to Menlough as they pass through Skehana (half parish of Menlough). A Williamite was a follower of King William III of England (r. 1689–1702) who deposed King James II and VII in the Glorious Revolution. William, the Stadtholder of the Dutch Republic, replaced James with the support of English Whigs. One of William's aims was to ensure England's entry into his League of Augsburg against France in the Nine Years' War. For Williamites in England, Scotland and Ireland, William was seen as the guarantor of civil and religious liberty and the Protestant monarchy against Catholic absolutism.
