Walter Adams (economist)
Walter Adams (August 27, 1922 – September 8, 1998) was an Austrian-born American economist and college professor. He served as the 13th President of Michigan State University and served as an expert witness before 36 congressional committees. Early life Walter Adams was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1922. His father, Edward Adams, was an international linen and diamond merchant; his mother, Ilona Schildkraut, was a homemaker. The family moved to Brooklyn, New York, in 1935, where he attended New Utrecht High School. He earned a BA in economics from Brooklyn College in 1942, graduating magna cum laude, before joining the U.S. Army in April 1943. Adams served with distinction in the 83rd Infantry and 11th Armored Divisions, landing at Normandy in the days following D-Day, "participating in the Battle of the Bulge, and helping to liberate three concentration camps." Walter Adams (bishop)
Walter Robert Adams (1 September 1877 – 25 July 1957) was a British Anglican bishop. Adams was born in London and studied for eight years at Ardingly College before moving to Hurstpierpoint College for Sixth Form. A first class honours mathematical scholar at Durham University ( University College), he was ordained as a deacon in 1901 and as a priest in 1905. Adams served as President of the Durham Union for Epiphany term of 1899. Curacies in County Durham and Lambeth were followed by five years as a missionary priest in Saskatchewan, Canada. Returning to England he was appointed Assistant Secretary to the Archbishop of Canterbury. This was followed by an academic career. In 1925 Adams returned to Canada as the first Bishop of Cariboo (1925-1934). In 1933 he was elected Bishop of Kootenay (1934-1947) and for two years, 1933-1934, he looked after both dioceses (Cariboo and Kootenay). Walter Sydney Adams (December 20, 1876 – May 11, 1956) was an American astronomer. Life and work Adams was born in Antioch, Turkey, to Lucien Harper Adams and Nancy Dorrance Francis Adams, missionary parents, and was brought to the U.S. in 1885 He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1898, then continued his education in Chicago and in Germany. After returning to the U.S., he began a career in Astronomy that culminated when he became director of the Mount Wilson Observatory. His primary interest was the study of stellar spectra. He worked on solar spectroscopy and co-discovered a relationship between the relative intensities of certain spectral lines and the absolute magnitude of a star. He was able to demonstrate that spectra could be used to determine whether a star was a giant or a dwarf. Walter Adams (15 March 1945 – 30 October 2023) was a West German middle distance runner who specialized in the 800 metres. Biography Adams finished fourth at the 1968 Olympic Games, and won a gold medal in 3 x 1000 metres relay at the 1969 European Indoor Games together with teammates Peter Adam and Harald Norpoth. He also competed at the 1966 European Championships and the Olympic Games without reaching the final. His personal best time was 1.44.9 minutes, achieved in July 1970 in Stuttgart. This was the European record once. He also helped set two world records in 4 x 800 metres and 4 x 880 yards relay, in 1966 and 1968. Walter Adams (1830–1892) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Walter Adams was born on 22 November 1830 in Yeovil, Somersetshire, England. He was educated at a private school at Somerton nearby. He arrived in Sydney, New South Wales in September 1849, where he worked as a blacksmith with his brothers Edward and James. Adam moved to Wide Bay in Queensland in 1853 where he resided in Maryborough and continued to work as a blacksmith. While in Maryborough, he established a machinery business a contracting business. ''Alice Adams'' is a 1935 romantic drama film directed by George Stevens and starring Katharine Hepburn. It was made by RKO and produced by Pandro S. Berman. Major general (Australia), Major General Walter Adams Coxen (22 June 1870 – 15 December 1949) was a senior Australian Army officer in the First World War. In April 1930 Coxen was promoted to the position of Chief of Army (Australia), Chief of the General Staff. He retired in 1931. Early life and career Walter Adams Coxen was born at Egham, England, on 22 June 1870. Coxen and his family moved to Australia in 1880. Walter was educated at Brisbane Grammar School and Toowoomba Grammar School.
