Walt Kirk

picture info	Walt Kirk Walton Kirk Jr. (September 3, 1924 – December 12, 2012) was an American professional basketball player. Walton Kirk Jr, the son of Walton Sr. and Gertrude Kirk, grew up in Mount Vernon, Illinois and graduated from Mt. Vernon Township High School in 1942, known in his home town and in southern Illinois as 'Junior' Kirk. While in high school, Kirk played basketball and was a first team all-state selection in 1942. He then attended the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign where he played basketball. He received his Bachelor Degree from the University of Illinois in 1947 and his master's degree from Loras College in 1972. He married Alyce "Joan" (Hitter) of Ottawa, Illinois on September 11, 1949. While at Illinois, he earned varsity letters in basketball from 1943–44 through 1946–47. Regular season The modern era of college basketball unofficially began with the 1945-46 season and the University of Illinois was quick to offer a team that was rebuilding its post-war image to that of a contender. 	1944–45 Illinois Fighting Illini Men's Basketball Team The 1944–45 Illinois Fighting Illini men's basketball team represented the University of Illinois. Regular season After the second worst season in Doug Mills tenure as the head coach of the Fighting Illini, the ongoing war created even more havoc with the 1944–45 season. The Illini were required to play games close to home which meant they played certain teams multiple times. For example, the team played Great Lakes three times, Chanute Field, in nearby Rantoul, Illinois, two times and George Mikan and the DePaul Blue Demons two times as well. As the season progressed, Mills experimented with several lineups, including a 19 player barrage versus Nebraska.
