Wally (band)
Wally was an English progressive rock band, led by the singer-songwriter Roy Webber, which originated in the early 1970s. Career In 1973, after playing the northern pub rock circuit that included venues in Manchester, Harrogate, Leeds and Bradford, they entered a New Act competition organised by the music paper ''Melody Maker'' making it to the finals at London's Roundhouse. They did not win – that honour went to Druid – but they caught the eye of one of the judges, "Whispering" Bob Harris. Their "runners-up" prize was the chance to record a session for Harris's BBC radio show, ''The Monday Program''. He took the band under his wing and set up a recording contract with Atlantic Records. Their debut album, '' Wally'' (1974) was co-produced by Harris, along with Rick Wakeman who had seen one of the band's warm up gigs before the Roundhouse final. After its release the band, now managed by Brian Lane, best known as the manager of Yes, embarked on a series of tours t ...

Wally (album)
''Wally'' is the 1974 eponymous first album by the band Wally. While the band fitted broadly into the progressive rock category, there was more than a hint of country / rock about the album, especially with Paul Middleton's steel guitar. The album is very much of its time, and shows influences of The Byrds, Crosby, Stills & Nash and the like. ''Wally'', produced by Bob Harris and Rick Wakeman was not a huge commercial success, but has gained and maintained a loyal following, to the extent that the album has recently been re-released on CD.Billboard - 16 nov. 1974 "... set boring, but the six man group, with top production from Bob Harris and Rick Wakeman, manages to keep the set vital and interesting throughout. ... Best cuts: "The Martyr," "I Just Wanna Be A Cowboy," "What To Do," "To The Urban Man." Roy Webber has returned to music after many years involved in his original profession of graphics, and recorded a new album with Will Jackson in 2006. The track "The Martyr" wa ...

La Wally
''La Wally'' is an opera in four acts by composer Alfredo Catalani, to a libretto by Luigi Illica, first performed at La Scala, Milan, on 20 January 1892. The libretto is based on a hugely successful ' by Wilhelmine von Hillern (1836–1916), ' (''The Vulture Wally: A Story from the Tyrolean Alps''). Wally, short for Walburga, is a girl with some heroic attributes. The story is based on an episode in the life of Tyrolean painter Anna Stainer-Knittel, whom von Hillern met. She gets her epithet "Geier" (vulture) from once stealing a vulture's hatchling from her nest. Von Hillern's piece was originally serialized in '' Deutsche Rundschau'' and was reproduced in English as "A German Peasant Romance"

The Wallies Of Wessex
The Wallies of Wessex were a group of people who squatted on ground close to Stonehenge in 1974. The Department of the Environment and the National Trust landowners started court proceedings to have the squatters evicted. The squatters, both to make a counter culture point and to protect themselves from court costs, all used aliases in court that included the name Wally. They lost the case and had to move a few feet to an alternative site, but the case was reported in the national press. The Wallies were involved in the organisation of the 1976 Trentishoe Whole Earth Fair. Wally The Green Monster
Wally the Green Monster is the official mascot for the Boston Red Sox. His name is derived from the Green Monster, the nickname of the 37-foot 2-inch wall in left field at Fenway Park. Wally debuted on April 13, 1997. Although he was an immediate success with children, he was not as well-received by older fans. Wally has since become more accepted by Red Sox fans of all ages, in part due to the late fan-favorite Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy creating stories about him and sharing them during televised games. Fictional biography According to the Boston Red Sox, Wally has been a long-time resident of Fenway Park, residing in the Green Monster wall since 1947. He wears Red Sox jersey #97, indicating the year of his emergence from the wall, and consistently wears his team-issued size 37 cap. In his spare time, Wally likes to play catch with the Red Sox players, and read his favorite book "''Hello, Wally''" written by his good friend and NESN Red Sox Broadcaster Jerry Remy. He al ...

The Wally
''The Wally'' is the trophy awarded to winners of an NHRA national event. They have been handed out at national events starting with the 1969 NHRA race season. With an antique brass plating over a standard metal mix and a solid walnut base, the "Wally" (named after NHRA founder Wally Parks) is 18 inches tall and weighs 12 pounds. Contrary to popular belief, the Wally trophy does not feature Parks himself, but is rather modeled after Top Gas racer Jack JoneAccording to the June 30, 1995 edition of National Dragster, in early 1969 Jack Jones was at his day job, and got a call from Wally Parks. Parks asked him if he would be willing to pose for pictures for a trophy at Pomona Raceway. Pomona is a 16 minute ride from Glendora where the NHRA is based. Jack agreed and a number of pictures were snapped, including the now iconic photo of him with his safety equipment and a tire. Later that year, the famous Wally trophy was introduced. It is the same design as in 1969. Background The NHR ...

Pickled Cucumber
A pickled cucumber (commonly known as a pickle in the United States and Canada and a gherkin in Britain, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand) is a usually small or miniature cucumber that has been pickled in a brine, vinegar, or other solution and left to ferment for some time, by either immersing the cucumbers in an acidic solution or through souring by lacto-fermentation. Pickled cucumbers are often part of mixed pickles. Historical origins It is often claimed that pickled cucumbers were first developed for workers building the Great Wall of China, though another hypothesis is that they were first made in the Tigris Valley of Mesopotamia, using cucumbers brought originally from India. Types Pickled cucumbers are highly popular in the United States and are a delicacy in northern and eastern Europe. Pickled cucumbers are flavored differently in different regions of the world. Brined pickles Brined pickles are prepared using the traditional process o ...
