Walid Doumiati
Walid Mahmoud El Doumiati (born July 16, 1968 in Beirut, Lebanon) is a retired Lebanese professional basketball player who last played for Sporting Al Riyadi Beirut. Doumiati alongside Elie Mechantaf and Fadi El Khatib helped build the sport of basketball in Lebanon since the draft of Lebanese NBA player Rony Seikaly. Walid was committed to Sporting Al Riyadi Beirut leading the team to successive titles, despite being held back by archrivals Hekmeh BC during the 1990s. Walid was also a member of the Lebanon national basketball team during its first ever appearance in the 2002 FIBA World Championship in Indianapolis after earning a silver medal at the 2001 ABC Championship The 2001 Asian Basketball Confederation Championship for Men was held in Shanghai, China. The point guard (PG), also called the one or the point, is one of the five Basketball positions, positions in a regulation basketball game. A point guard has perhaps the most specialized role of any position. Sagesse Sports Club (), known as Hekmeh ( ar, الحكمة) in Arabic, is a Lebanese sports club based in Beirut. The basketball team was established in 1992, as part of the Club Sagesse established in 1943 with mainly the football (soccer) team. Fadi El Khatib ( ar, فادي الخطيب; born January 1, 1979), nicknamed "the Lebanese Tiger", is a Lebanese professional basketball player who plays in the Lebanese Basketball League for Sagesse. El Khatib played for several teams in the Lebanese Basketball League, and also played abroad in Syria, Ukraine and China. He was also a member of the Lebanon national team that finished runners-up in the FIBA Asia Championship three times, in 2001, 2005 and 2007. The Lebanese Basketball League is the top-tier professional men's basketball league in Lebanon. It is organized annually as a national championship with playoffs and a national cup by the Lebanese Basketball Federation (FLB). Currently, the league consists of 12 teams, of which six are located in Beirut. The most successful club in the history of the league is Al Riyadi who have won a record 16 championships. History The initial Lebanese basketball league was formed in as early as the 1950s; however, it was stopped during the Lebanese Civil War.
