Wakulla Beach, Florida
Wakulla Beach is an unincorporated community in Wakulla County, Florida, United States. It is located on the northern shore of Goose Creek Bay, near the Gulf of Mexico. This was a platted town that was supposed to bring tourists and visitors to northern Florida. Only a couple of houses remain. A hotel ruin is also visible, dating to the 1920s. There is no beach per se, a very shallow bay. No amenities at this spot in the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, at the end of a very long dirt road. Wakulla County is a county located in the Big Bend region in the northern portion of the U.S. state of Florida. As of the 2020 census, the population was 33,764. Its county seat is Crawfordville. Wakulla County is part of the Tallahassee, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. Wakulla County has a near-absence of any municipal population, with two small municipalities holding about 3% of the population. The county seat, Crawfordville, is one of only two unincorporated county seats among Florida's 67 counties. Wakulla is a census-designated place (CDP) in Robeson County, North Carolina, United States. During the 2010 census, the population was reported to be 105. History Wakulla was settled in 1860 and named by Colonel Peter P. Smith reportedly using a local indigenous name meaning "clear water" in reference to nearby springs. Geography Wakulla is located at (34.729295, -79.220714). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , all land. The Wakulla community is generally considered to be located between the roads of Rev. Bill and Doc Henderson, and to extend to Mt. Zion and Beaver Dam Roads, with its center being at Oxendine Elementary School and Cherokee Chapel Holiness Methodist Church. Wakulla Springs is located south of Tallahassee, Florida and east of Crawfordville in Wakulla County, Florida at the crossroads of State Road 61 and State Road 267. It is protected in the Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park. Description Wakulla cave is a branching flow-dominated cave that has developed in the Floridan Aquifer under the Woodville Karst Plain of north Florida. It is classified as a first magnitude spring and a major exposure point for the Floridan Aquifer. The spring forms the Wakulla River which flows to the southeast where it joins the St. Mark's River. After a short the St. Mark's empties into the Gulf of Mexico at Apalachee Bay. ''Wakulla'' was a steam cargo ship built in 1918-1919 by Los Angeles Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company of San Pedro for the United States Shipping Board as part of the wartime shipbuilding program of the Emergency Fleet Corporation (EFC) to restore the nation's Merchant Marine. SS ''Wakulla'' was a steel-hulled, single-screw cargo vessel built under a contract from the United States Shipping Board (USSB) at Los Angeles, California, by the Los Angeles Shipbuilding and Drydock Company. She was launched on 14 January 1918. Acquired by the United States Navy on 22 June 1918 for World War I service, she was given Identification Number (Id. USS ''Wakulla'' (AOG-44) was a ''Mettawee''-class gasoline tanker acquired by the U.S. Navy for the dangerous task of transporting gasoline to warships in the fleet, and to remote Navy stations. The second ship to be named ''Wakulla'', ''AOG-44'' was laid down on 31 October 1944 under a Maritime Commission contract (MC hull 2070) at Bayonne, New Jersey, by the East Coast Shipyards, Inc.; launched on 17 December 1944; sponsored by Mrs. J. Wakulla High School
Wakulla High School is the only public four year high school located in Wakulla County, Florida, United States. It is part of the Wakulla County Public Schools network. The Florida Department of Education has labeled Wakulla High School as a "School of Excellence" in their school accountability reports for the years 2020 and 2021. History Wakulla High School opened in 1967. It combined (via desegregation) three former schools: Sopchoppy, Shadeville, and Crawfordville High Schools.
