Wake Forest Historic District is a national historic district located at Wake Forest, Wake County, North Carolina. The district encompasses 245 contributing buildings, one contributing site, and five contributing structures built between about 1890 and 1953 and located in the historic core of the town of Wake Forest. It includes notable examples of Greek Revival and Federal style architecture. Located in the district are the separately listed Lea Laboratory, South Brick House, and the Powell-White House, a contributing resource in the Glen Royall Mill Village Historic District. Wake Forest, North Carolina
Wake Forest is a town in Franklin, Granville and Wake counties in the U.S. state of North Carolina; located almost entirely in Wake County, it lies just north of the state capital, Raleigh. Wake County is located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. In the 2020 census, its population was 1,129,410, making it North Carolina's most-populous county. Greek Revival Architecture
The Greek Revival was an architectural movement which began in the middle of the 18th century but which particularly flourished in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, predominantly in northern Europe and the United States and Canada, but also in Greece itself following independence in 1832. It revived many aspects of the forms and styles of ancient Greek architecture, in particular the Greek temple, with varying degrees of thoroughness and consistency. A product of Hellenism, it may be looked upon as the last phase in the development of Neoclassical architecture, which had for long mainly drawn from Roman architecture. The term was first used by Charles Robert Cockerell in a lecture he gave as Professor of Architecture to the Royal Academy of Arts, London in 1842. Federal Architecture
Federal-style architecture is the name for the classicizing architecture built in the newly founded United States between 1780 and 1830, and particularly from 1785 to 1815, which was heavily based on the works of Andrea Palladio with several innovations on Palladian architecture by Thomas Jefferson and his contemporaries first for Jefferson's Monticello estate and followed by many examples in government building throughout the United States. An excellent example of this is the White House. This style shares its name with its era, the Federalist Era. The name Federal style is also used in association with Federal furniture, furniture design in the United States of the same time period. Lea Laboratory
Lea Laboratory is a historic laboratory building located on the original campus of Wake Forest University at Wake Forest, Wake County, North Carolina. It was designed by noted Baltimore architect John Appleton Wilson (1851–1927) and built in 1887–1888. It consists of a two-story pedimented central brick block, three bays wide and seven deep flanked by one-story pedimented brick wings. The building has a blend of Colonial Revival and Victorian design elements. It is the oldest remaining building on the original campus of Wake Forest University, now Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, and was one of the first chemical laboratories constructed on a Southern college campus. South Brick House
South Brick House is a historic home located at Wake Forest, Wake County, North Carolina. The house was built in 1838, and is a -story, double-pile, Greek Revival style brick dwelling with a side gable roof. A number of small, frame additions were made to the rear of the house, beginning in the late-19th century. It features a replacement pedimented portico supported by four Doric order columns. The house retains finely preserved interior decoration from Asher Benjamin’s 1830 pattern book, ''Practical House Carpenter''. Also on the property are the contributing kitchen (1855), smokehouse (1855), and a single-story, side-gabled, weatherboarded, frame house (c. 1838, c. 1960).
