Waikanae railway station in Waikanae on the Kapiti Coast, New Zealand is the terminal station on the Kapiti Line for Metlink's electric multiple unit commuter trains from Wellington. The railway is part of the North Island Main Trunk line that connects Wellington and Auckland. Services Waikanae is the northern terminal for Kapiti Line commuter trains operated by Transdev Wellington under the Metlink brand operating between Wellington and Porirua or Waikanae. Services are operated by electric multiple units of the FT/FP class (Matangi). Two diesel-hauled carriage trains, the Capital Connection and the Northern Explorer, pass through the station. The Capital Connection stops at Waikanae but the Northern Explorer does not. Travel times by train are thirty-nine minutes to Porirua and one hour to Wellington for trains that stop at all stations and fifty-seven minutes for express trains that do not stop between Porirua and Wellington. The Wellington Region has a well developed public transport system, the most used in New Zealand. Transdev Wellington is the operator of Wellington's Metlink rail network in New Zealand. The entity is a partnership of Transdev Australasia and Hyundai Rotem, who were awarded the contract to operate and maintain the commuter rail system in December 2015 by the Greater Wellington Regional Council. The contract commenced on 3 July 2016, taking over from KiwiRail division Tranz Metro. Background The Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) put the contract for the operation of Wellington's metropolitan commuter rail services out to tender in 2015. Paekakariki railway station in Paekakariki, Paekākāriki on the Kapiti Coast, New Zealand is an intermediate station on the Kapiti Line for Public transport in the Wellington Region, Metlink's electric multiple unit commuter trains from Wellington railway station, Wellington. The Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company (WMR or W&MR) was a private railway company that built, owned and operated the Wellington-Manawatu railway line between Thorndon in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, and Longburn, near Palmerston North in the Manawatu, between 1881 and 1908, when it was acquired by the New Zealand Government Railways. Longburn Railway Station
Longburn railway station was a station in Longburn, on the North Island Main Trunk in New Zealand. The platform, which is across from the Fonterra Factory, remains but the structure has been demolished. There have been four station sites at Longburn. From 1873 it was on the Foxton-Palmerston North tramway. When the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company (WMR) opened from 1885, a station was built to the south of the Foxton line (see photo to right), in 1905 a new station opened on the Awapuni side of the junction and, after the Milson Deviation opened in 1959, a new station was built to the north in 1962. Waikanae (, ) is a town on the Kapiti Coast, 60 kilometres north of the Wellington CBD. The name is a Māori word meaning "waters" (''wai'') "of the grey mullet". Capital Connection
The Capital Connection is a long-distance commuter train operated by KiwiRail between Palmerston North and the capital city of Wellington on the North Island Main Trunk. In 2018 the service faced funding issues, but the Government ensured that the service would continue, with the NZTA and regional councils investing in subsidies and the replenishment of rolling stock. The modernisation and replacement of the service has been included in Horizons' 2021-2031 Regional Land Transport Plan.
