Waialua High School
Waialua High and Intermediate School is a public intermediate and high school for grades 7–12 in the Waialua CDP in City and County of Honolulu,2000 Map: - Compare to addresses of the school. Hawaii on the Island of Oahu. The campus boasts the painted plastic mural ''A Waialua Day'' by Balazs Szabo and the mixed media sculpture ''Waialua'' from Ken Shutt's ''Konohiki Series''. History The school was founded in 1914 as a single-roomed school called Mokuleia School. In 1927 Andrew E. Cox donated tracts of land for the school's campus, and it was renamed Andrew E. Cox Junior High School. In 1937 the school was enlarged to include a senior high school and was renamed to its present name. Waialua () is a census-designated place and North Shore community in the Waialua District on the island of Oahu, City & County of Honolulu, Hawaii, United States. As of the 2020 census, the CDP had a population of 4,062. Waialua was one of the six original districts of ancient Hawaii on the island, known as ''moku''. Waialua is a former (sugar) mill town and residential area, quite different in its quiet ambiance from nearby Haleiwa, which is more commercial and tourist oriented. Balazs Szabo
Balazs Szabo (1943-2022) was a Hungarian-born artist and author that lived in the United States since 1956. He was best known as a fine artist influenced by the Viennese "fantastic realists" style. He derived his artistic inspiration from Hieronymus Bosch, Salvador Dalí and Max Ernst Arik Brauer, Ernst Fuchs among others. His portraits, large murals and surrealist works are internationally known and can be found in private and in corporate collections throughout Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, Europe and the United States. Balazs Szabo's selected works are in the museums of Hawaii, New Jersey and North Carolina. Mr. Szabo's first published art book ''The eye of Muse'' (1985) won the 1987 USA Print Design Excellence Award was selected out of 40,000 contestants. Ken Shutt
Ken Shutt (1928-April 2, 2010) was an American sculptor and watercolorist who was born in Long Beach, California. He grew up in Whittier, California, and graduated from Pasadena City College, the Art Center College of Design and the Chouinard Art Institute. He moved to Hawaii in 1963, and lived there until 1995. He returned to California in 1995, to be near his foundry, when he was commissioned to create a bronze sculpture for the entrance of Sea Life Park Hawaii. He died 2010, at age 81, in Atascadero, California. His best known paintings are watercolors of Hawaii's flora (see image). His sculptures often combine such diverse materials as resin, wood, terrazzo, bronze, and granite.
