Wahrlich, Wahrlich, Ich Sage Euch, BWV 86
(Truly, truly I say to you), 86, is a church cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach. He composed it in Leipzig for , the fifth Sunday after Easter, and first performed it on 14 May 1724. An unknown poet began the text with a quotation from the farewell discourses of Jesus. He used a stanza of Georg Grünwald's hymn "" in movement 3 and as the closing chorale a stanza from "" by Paul Speratus (1524). Bach structured the cantata in six movements, a gospel quotation in the beginning, chorales as movements 3 and 6, otherwise recitatives and arias. He scored it for three vocal soloists, a four-part choir and a Baroque instrumental ensemble of two oboes d'amore, strings and continuo. Church Cantata (Bach)
Throughout his life as a musician, Johann Sebastian Bach composed cantatas for both secular and sacred use. His church cantatas are cantatas which he composed for use in the Lutheran church, mainly intended for the occasions of the liturgical year. Bach's ''Nekrolog'' mentions five cantata cycles: "Fünf Jahrgänge von Kirchenstücken, auf alle Sonn- und Festtage" (Five year-cycles of pieces for the church, for all Sundays and feast days), which would amount to at least 275 cantatas,Alfred Dörffel. Basso continuo parts, almost universal in the Baroque era (1600–1750), provided the harmonic structure of the music by supplying a bassline and a chord progression. The phrase is often shortened to continuo, and the instrumentalists playing the continuo part are called the ''continuo group''. The musical term alto, meaning "high" in Italian (Latin: ''altus''), historically refers to the contrapuntal part higher than the tenor and its associated vocal range. In 4-part voice leading alto is the second-highest part, sung in choruses by either low women's or high men's voices. He composed it in Leipzig for Cantate, the fourth Sunday after Easter, and first performed it on 7 May 1724. History and words Bach composed the cantata in his first year in Leipzig for the Fourth Sunday after Easter, called Cantate. The prescribed readings for the Sunday were from the Epistle of James, "Every good gift comes from the Father of lights" (), and from the Gospel of John, Jesus announcing the Comforter in his Farewell Discourse ().
