Wadleigh State Park
Wadleigh State Park is a public recreation area located on the south shore of Kezar Lake in Sutton, New Hampshire. The state park has a bathhouse and playing fields and offers opportunities for swimming, picnicking, fishing, and boating. History The park was developed by workers with the State Emergency Work Agency and the Civilian Conservation Corps after the land was given to the state by the Village Improvement Society, which had raised money to make its initial purchase through public subscription. The 1938 Hurricane destroyed much the park including recently constructed buildings and vast amounts of its forest. Sutton, New Hampshire
Sutton is a town in Merrimack County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,978 at the 2020 census. Sutton includes the villages of Sutton Mills (shown as "Sutton" on topographic maps), North Sutton, South Sutton and East Sutton. North Sutton is home to Wadleigh State Park on Kezar Lake. History The town was granted in 1749 by the Masonian Proprietors to inhabitants of Haverhill, Newbury, and Bradford, Massachusetts, as well as Kingston, New Hampshire. It was called "Perrystown" after Obadiah Perry, one of the proprietors. But the French and Indian War delayed settlement until 1767, when David Peaslee arrived. Many proprietors forfeited their claims, even with an extension in 1773, so the town was regranted in 1784. The second group of settlers were from Sutton, Massachusetts, source of the town's current name. New Hampshire Division Of Parks And Recreation
The New Hampshire Division of Parks and Recreation is responsible for the management of state parks within New Hampshire, the Cannon Mountain Ski Area, the Bureau of Trails, the Bureau of Historic Sites, and various community programs. Philip A. Bryce is director of the division. Since 2017, the division's parent agency has been the New Hampshire Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR). State parks are parks or other protected areas managed at the sub-national level within those nations which use "state" as a political subdivision. Civilian Conservation Corps
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a voluntary government work relief program that ran from 1933 to 1942 in the United States for unemployed, unmarried men ages 18–25 and eventually expanded to ages 17–28. The CCC was a major part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal that supplied manual labor jobs related to the conservation and development of natural resources in rural lands owned by federal, state, and local governments. The CCC was designed to supply jobs for young men and to relieve families who had difficulty finding jobs during the Great Depression in the United States Robert Fechner was the first director of this agency, succeeded by James McEntee following Fechner's death. The largest enrollment at any one time was 300,000. 1938 Hurricane
The 1938 New England Hurricane (also referred to as the Great New England Hurricane and the Long Island Express Hurricane) was one of the deadliest and most destructive tropical cyclones to strike Long Island, New York, and New England. The storm formed near the coast of Africa on September 9, becoming a Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir–Simpson hurricane scale, before making landfall as a Category 3 hurricane on Long Island on Wednesday, September 21. It is estimated that the hurricane killed 682 people, damaged or destroyed more than 57,000 homes, and caused property losses estimated at $306 million ($4.7 billion in 2017). Mount Sunapee State Park is a public recreation area in Newbury, New Hampshire. The state park's nearly include most of Mount Sunapee and a beach area on Lake Sunapee. Winslow State Park is a public recreation area located on the northwest slope of Mount Kearsarge in Wilmot, New Hampshire. Rollins State Park is a public recreation area on the southern slope of Mount Kearsarge in Warner, New Hampshire.
