Wading River, New York
Wading River is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County, New York, United States, on the North Shore of Long Island. As of the 2010 census, the CDP population was 7,719. It is adjacent to Shoreham and shares a school district. Most of Wading River lies within the Town of Riverhead, but a small portion is in the Town of Brookhaven. The name of the hamlet comes from the original Algonquian name for the area, ''Pauquaconsuk,'' meaning "the place where we wade for thick, round-shelled clams". It was also previously known as “Lonsefekwa”. "Wading in the River" or Wading River was adopted by the first English colonists. The Benson House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Wading River Radio Station, is a three-story, red-shingled wood-frame home in Wading River, New York, situated on the North Shore of Long Island, on a bluff overlooking Long Island Sound. Medford is a station in the hamlet of Medford, New York on the Main Line ( Greenport Branch) of the Long Island Rail Road. Medford is located on New York State Route 112 between Peconic Avenue and Long Island Avenue. Access to the station is available from a narrow curving roadway leading off Route 112. This roadway used to connect with the Ohio Avenue intersection until Ohio Avenue was closed north of Peconic Avenue in 2007. It is also accessible from the north end of Oregon Avenue, although the Medford Fire Department periodically closes the Oregon Avenue access road for drills or other exercises. Calverton, New York
Calverton is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) on eastern Long Island in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 6,510 at the 2010 census. Most of Calverton is in the Town of Riverhead, while the area south of the Peconic River is a mostly undeveloped smaller portion in the Town of Brookhaven. History Calverton was first referred to as " Baiting Hollow Station" when the Long Island Rail Road arrived in 1844. The station closed in 1958, but the sheltered shed for the station remained standing as of 2007. The area's Native American name was ''Conungum'' or ''Kanungum'', meaning "fixed line" or "boundary". Riverhead is a census-designated place (CDP) roughly corresponding to the hamlet by the same name located in the town of Riverhead in Suffolk County, New York on Long Island. The CDP's population was 13,299 at the 2010 census. Situated at the mouth of the Peconic River, which empties into Peconic Bay where the North and South Forks of Long Island split, the town of Riverhead—of which the CDP is a part—is the official county seat of Suffolk County. Wading River (LIRR Station)
Wading River was the terminus of the abandoned Wading River Extension on the Port Jefferson Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. This is an abandoned station just outside south of downtown Wading River, and was located on Wading River-Manor Road (former Suffolk CR 25) north of New York State Route 25A. History Wading River station was originally built in 1895 during the extension of the Port Jefferson Branch to Wading River, and was once slated to continue eastward and rejoin the Main Line at either Riverhead or Calverton. Though neither of these proposals were carried out, it had a siding that crossed Wading River-Manor Road toward a coal bunker, and was extended to the site of an LIRR Demonstration farm from 1905 to 1928. The Port Jefferson Branch is a rail line and service owned and operated by the Long Island Rail Road in the U.S. state of New York. The branch splits from the Main Line just east of Hicksville and runs northeast and east to Port Jefferson. Several stations on the Main Line west of Hicksville are served primarily by trains bound to/from the Port Jefferson branch, so LIRR maps and schedules for the public include that part of the Main Line in the "Port Jefferson Branch" service. Riverhead is a town within Suffolk County, New York, United States, on the north shore of Long Island.
