Wacław Mayzel
Wacław Mayzel (September 12, 1847 – April 19, 1916) was a Polish histologist and the first person to describe mitosis. Biography Wacław Mayzel was born on September 12, 1847 to Józef and Rozalia (Minheymer) Mayzel, in Kunów, Poland. Having graduated St Ann's secondary school in Cracow in 1865, he enrolled at the Faculty of Medicine in the Warsaw General School. Five years later, Mayzel earned a doctorate in the field. During his time as a student, and while working at Henryk Fryderyk Hoyer's (senior) Institute of Histology and Physiology, he wrote a paper titled ''Poszukiwania nad powstawaniem ropy'' (''Exploring the formation of pus''), critically acclaimed by his faculty. In it, Mayzel discusses Cohnheim's claims that during inflammation, leukocytes exit blood vessels and take part in the formation of pus. Kunów
Kunów is a town in Ostrowiec County, Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, Poland, with 3,153 inhabitants (2004). It lies in Lesser Poland, on the Kamienna river, northwest of Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski. Kunów was granted Magdeburg rights in 1365, stripped of them in 1867, to again become a town in 1990. It is located along the European route E371, and the town has a rail station on the Skarżysko-Kamienna – Sandomierz line. In the early Middle Ages Kunów belonged to the Archbishops of Kraków, who had a manor house here. In 1241 the village was raided by the Mongols (see Mongol invasion of Poland), and in 1247 it was destroyed by the army of Prince Konrad Mazowiecki. In 1365 King Kazimierz Wielki granted it town rights, and at that time Kunów was the seat of a parish whose area was . The town belonged to Lesser Poland’s Sandomierz Voivodeship.
