Wabaunsee County (standard abbreviation: WB) is a county located in the U.S. state of Kansas. As of the 2020 census, the county population was 6,877. Its county seat is Alma. The county was created by the territorial legislature of Kansas Territory on March 25, 1859, and was named for a chief of the Potawatomi Indians. White City is a city in Morris County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 447. History White City was founded in 1871 by a colony from Chicago. It was named for F.C. White, superintendent of the Neosho division of the M-K-T Railroad, which was built on the land in 1868, prior to the existence of the community. Prior to the naming of the community, other names considered were "New Chicago" (because the founders came from Chicago) and "Swedeland" (because so many Swedes settled in the community). History Dwight had its start in the year 1887 by the building of the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway through that territory. It was named after J. N. McFarland, a Topeka, Kansas judge and member of the town company. Paxico is a city in Wabaunsee County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 210. History Paxico was originally called Strong Mill, and under this former name was established in 1879 about one mile east of the present town site. A post office was set up and named Paxico, in honor of the Potawatomi medicine man Pashqua. When the railroad was built though the area in 1886, the town moved in order to be alongside it. Vera, Kansas
Vera is a ghost town in Wabaunsee County, Kansas, United States. It was located approximately 3.6 miles east of Paxico near Mill Creek, a tributary to the Kansas River. History Frederick L. Raymond was an early settler. When the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway built a line through the area in 1887, part of it ran through Raymond's farm. Raymond was influential in getting a flag station and post office named "Vera" erected at the location. The residents of Vera paid for a siding to be built, and donated of land on which the flag station, as well as a platform and stock yard, were built. The railway was soon after acquired by the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. In 1893, residents of Vera filed a complaint with the Kansas Board of Railroad Commissioners, claiming the settlement needed a depot and additional storage facilities. It was named from a grove of maple trees growing upon an elevation. In 1887, the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway built a main line from Topeka through Maple Hill to Herington.
