WYSO
WYSO (91.3 FM) is a radio station in Yellow Springs, Ohio, near Dayton, community owned and operated; formerly licensed and operated by Antioch College. It is the flagship National Public Radio member station for the Miami Valley, including the cities of Dayton and Springfield. WYSO signed on in 1958 and has the distinction of being located in one of the smallest villages to host an NPR affiliate station. WYSO broadcasts in the HD Radio format. WYSO was originally on 91.5 MHz. It moved to 91.3 MHz in 1980. History WYSO started in 1958 as a student and faculty station with a 10-watt transmitter located at the student union building of Antioch College, on the air for only 4 hours a day. Antioch College
Antioch College is a private liberal arts college in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Founded in 1850 by the Christian Connection, the college began operating in 1852 as a non-sectarian institution; politician and education reformer Horace Mann was its first president. The college has been politically liberal and reformist since its inception. It was the fourth college in the country to admit African-American students on an equal basis with whites. It has had a tumultuous financial and corporative history, closing repeatedly, for years at a time, until new funding was assembled. Antioch College began opening new campuses in 1964, when it purchased the Putney School of Education in Vermont. Eventually it opened over 38 different campuses, and in 1978 it changed its name to Antioch University. William Felker
William Felker (born June 26, 1940) is an American former professor at Central State University, and author. Life William Felker was born in Hennepin County, Minnesota to Robert Felker and Mary Keefe. Felker went to college at University of Minnesota and got his BA in Philosophy and MA in foreign languages and area studies. Felker also went on to get his PhD in foreign languages and history at the University of Tennessee. In mid-1978, Felker moved to Yellow Springs, Ohio where he began to write ''Poor Will's Almanack''. Throughout his career he has won three awards including one from the Ohio Newspaper Association. Yellow Springs, Ohio
Yellow Springs is a village in Greene County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,697 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is home to Antioch College. History The area of the village had long been visited and occupied by the Shawnee Native Americans well before European-American settlement. In 1825, the village was founded by William Mills and approximately 100 families, followers of Robert Owen, who wanted to emulate the utopian community at New Harmony, Indiana. The village was named after nearby natural springs with waters high in iron content. The communitarian efforts dissolved due to internal conflicts. The completion of the Little Miami Railroad in 1846 brought increased commerce, inhabitants, and tourism to this area of Greene County. ''Morning Edition'' is an American radio news program produced and distributed by NPR. It airs weekday mornings (Monday through Friday) and runs for two hours, and many stations repeat one or both hours.
