WWTH (100.7 FM), Oscoda, Michigan, is a radio station broadcasting a classic rock format to the Oscoda, Tawas, Alpena area of northeastern lower Michigan. The station is known as "Thunder Rock", The Sunrise Side's Classic Rock." History WWTH was originally WCLS "Sunny 100-dot-7," airing a satellite-fed adult contemporary format from Jones Radio. For a time, WCLS simulcast its programming on 93.9 FM WCLX in Mio, which is now WAVC. In 1998, WCLS was sold from Spectrum Communications to Ives Broadcasting, which also owned WHSB 107.7 FM in Alpena at the time, and became "Kix 100.7," a satellite-fed country station. After only about a year, "Kix" reverted to the "Sunny" satellite AC format. Oscoda, Michigan
Oscoda ( ) is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Iosco County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The CDP had a population of 916 at the 2020 census. The community is located within Au Sable Township and Oscoda Township at the mouth of the Au Sable River along Lake Huron. History The area was first settled as early as 1867 when the firm of Smith, Kelley, & Dwight purchased land here and platted the community. A post office under the name Au Sable served the area until the Oscoda post office was established on July 1, 1875. The name Oscoda is believed to come from Henry Schoolcraft, who used a shortened form of ossin and muscoda, which means a pebbly prairie. The Lumberman's Monument is located nearby and was dedicated in 1932 in honor of the early lumberjacks that first populated the area. WHAK-FM (99.9 FM, "The Wave") is a radio station licensed to Rogers City, Michigan with studios in Alpena. The station plays classic hits of the 1980s and 1990s. It has a local weekday-morning show and airs Local Radio Networks' "Classic Hits" format the remainder of the time. Alpena ( ') is the only city in and county seat of Alpena County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 10,483 at the 2010 census. After Traverse City, it is the second most populated city in the Northern Michigan region. The city is surrounded by Alpena Township, but the two are administered autonomously. Mio ( ) is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Oscoda County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is the county seat of Oscoda County. The population of the CDP was 1,690 at the 2020 census. Mio is situated along the boundary between Mentor Township on the east, Big Creek Township on the west, and Elmer Township to the northwest. As an unincorporated community, Mio has no legal autonomy as an incorporated municipality. WHSB (107.7 FM, "107.7 The Bay") is a 100,000-watt radio station licensed to Alpena, Michigan broadcasting a Top 40 (CHR) format. The station, which began broadcasting in 1964, has featured some type of contemporary music format since at least the early 1970s, and is currently the only radio station in northeastern Michigan playing currently charted pop music. History In the 1980s, the station went by the names "WhisBee", "Music 108" and "HSB, The Music Station." WMKC (102.9 FM) is a radio station licensed to Indian River, Michigan. It airs a country music format called Big Country 102.9. The station is owned by Black Diamond Broadcast Holdings, LLC. History: A Dentist's Dream Beginnings WMKC ("MacKinaC"), owned by Mighty-Mac Broadcasting Corp., signed on in January 1982 by a Lansing dentist, Donald "Doc" Benson. Benson loved country music and wanted northern Michigan to have a WITL clone for when he traveled up north. He already owned an AM in St. Ignace, WIDG ("Widge By The (Mackinac) Bridge") 940.
