WWIL-FM (Life 90.5 FM) is a radio station broadcasting a contemporary Christian music format. Licensed to Wilmington, North Carolina, United States, the station serves the Wilmington, Jacksonville and North Myrtle Beach areas. The station is owned by Carolina Christian Radio, Inc, a 501c3 organization. Carolina Christian Radio is funded by the generous donations of individual listeners. History Family Radio Network purchased 1490 AM WWIL in 1993 and, while the station struggled at first, the station was soon doing so well that Jim Stephens planned an FM station. 90.5 FM WWIL signed on in 1995 with 20,000 watts and a contemporary Christian music format that included Sandi Patti, Michael W. Wilmington is a port city in and the county seat of New Hanover County in coastal southeastern North Carolina, United States. With a population of 115,451 at the 2020 census, it is the eighth most populous city in the state. WWIL (1490 AM) was a radio station broadcasting a Gospel format, licensed to Wilmington, North Carolina, United States. The station was last owned by James and Maxzine Utley, through licensee CLI Radio, LLC. History From 1964 to 1977, the station had the call sign WHSL. R. Darryl Davis was host of "Fat Man's Blues Shop" on WWIL; he later played "Blues in the Night" on WHQR. Family Radio Network Inc. purchased WWIL in 1992 from a Jacksonville church. Before that, the station was R&B. The station is owned by Carolina Christian Radio, Inc. History In the mid-1980s, Dennis Anderson, an owner of several McDonald's franchises, & Michael Escalante started Praise Broadcasting Network Inc.to address the lack of Christian radio in the area. WMYT, a 10,000-watt AM which had been off the air since 1996 (when Hurricane Fran damaged the transmitter site and operations), signed on as the first station in the network with Darryl "Chuck" Langley serving as station manager. Charles Rozell Swindoll (born October 18, 1934) is an evangelical Christian pastor, author, educator, and radio preacher. He founded ''Insight for Living'', headquartered in Frisco, Texas, which airs a radio program of the same name on more than 2,000 stations around the world in 15 languages. He is currently senior pastor at Stonebriar Community Church, in Frisco, Texas. "First Call" is a bugle call with three distinct meanings. U.S. military use At a U.S. military installation it is a pre-reveille "courtesy" signal, sounded around 05:50, originally to assemble the trumpeters to deliver the reveille that would be forthcoming at 06:00. Some locations also sound it a few minutes before "Retreat" (lowering the flag at the end of the day).
