WUEC (89.7 FM) is a radio station in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, United States. The station is part of Wisconsin Public Radio (WPR) and broadcasts its WPR Music service consisting of classical and jazz music with news updates. WUEC also broadcasts local programming from studios in the Wisconsin Public Broadcasting regional center in Eau Claire and three hours of student programming a week from studios in the Hibbard Humanities building at the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire (UW-EC). WUEC went on the air on October 27, 1975, as the student-run radio station at UW-EC, which was the last university in the University of Wisconsin System at the time to get such a station. WHEM is a Christian radio station in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, broadcasting on 91.3 MHz FM. The station is owned by Fourth Dimension, Inc. History The construction permit for 91.3 MHz in Eau Claire was originally obtained by the state Educational Communications Board for Wisconsin Public Radio. The network at the time was converting to a dual-program service, but it lacked a second transmitter beyond WHWC to serve Eau Claire. The network then abandoned those plans, even though it held the construction permit, and opted to simulcast most of its classical music and arts programming on WUEC, the student station of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire; however, this programming did not air during afternoons and evenings, when UW-Eau Claire student broadcasting was on the air. Eau Claire (; ) (French for "clear water") is a city mostly located in Eau Claire County, Wisconsin, of which it is the county seat, and with a small portion in Chippewa County, Wisconsin. WVSS (90.7 FM) is a radio station licensed to Menomonie, Wisconsin. The station is part of Wisconsin Public Radio (WPR) and airs WPR's "NPR News & Music Network", consisting of classical music and news and talk programming, as well as local news from WPR's regional studio in Eau Claire. Prior to being a Wisconsin Public Radio transmitter, WVSS was a station programmed by students at the University of Wisconsin–Stout in Menomonie. Student programming moved off the FM frequency in 1988, and it broadcast classical music programming for two years until joining WPR in 1990. WOVM (91.1 FM, "The Avenue") is a non-commercial American radio station licensed to Appleton, Wisconsin. The station is owned by Music That Matters, Inc. The station was assigned the WOVM call letters by the Federal Communications Commission on September 20, 2005. Prior to that time, WOVM was WLFM, the radio station of Lawrence University in Appleton. WGNW (99.9 FM) is a radio station serving the Eau Claire region of Wisconsin. The transmitter is located six miles northeast of Bloomer, Wisconsin. History The station was initially licensed to Lawrence Busse as WDRK. Central Communications purchased the license from Busse in 2001. WDRK started with an 80's music format when it signed on in mid-August 2001, then officially debuted itself on August 20, 2001, as "99.9 The Carp" with an active rock format. WDRK and sister stations WAXX-FM, WAYY, WIAL-FM, WEAQ and WECL-FM were sold to Maverick Media, LLC in 2003. WDRK began broadcasting live 24 hours a day on the Internet in April, 2006.
