WTA Ranking
The WTA rankings are the ratings defined by the Women's Tennis Association, introduced in November 1975. Iga Świątek is the current world No. 1. Ranking method The WTA rankings are based on a rolling 52-week, cumulative system. A player's ranking is determined by her results at a maximum of 16 tournaments for singles and 11 for doubles and points are awarded based on how far a player advances in a tournament. The basis for calculating a player's ranking are those tournaments that yield the highest ranking points during the rolling 52-week period with the condition that they must include points from the 4 Grand Slams, the 4 Premier Mandatory tournaments and the WTA Finals. In addition, for Top 20 players, their best two results at Premier 5 tournaments will also count. Up until 2016, the WTA also distributed ranking points, for singles players only, who competed at the Summer Olympics. However, this has since been discontinued. Sports Rating System
A sports rating system is a system that analyzes the results of sports competitions to provide ratings for each team or player. Common systems include polls of expert voters, crowdsourcing non-expert voters, betting markets, and computer systems. Ratings, or power ratings, are numerical representations of competitive strength, often directly comparable so that the game outcome between any two teams can be predicted. Rankings, or power rankings, can be directly provided (e.g., by asking people to rank teams), or can be derived by sorting each team's ratings and assigning an ordinal rank to each team, so that the highest rated team earns the #1 rank. Rating systems provide an alternative to traditional sports standings which are based on win–loss–tie ratios. Iga Świątek defeated Ons Jabeur in the final, 6–2, 7–6(7–5) to win the women's singles title at the 2022 US Open. It was her third major title, and second of the season, making Świątek the first player since Angelique Kerber in 2016 to win multiple majors in a season. Świątek became the first Polish woman in the Open Era to reach the US Open quarterfinals, semifinals, and final. Świątek also became the youngest woman to win three majors since Maria Sharapova in 2008. Emma Raducanu was the defending champion, but lost in the first round to Alizé Cornet. It was the third time the defending US Open champion lost in the first round, after Svetlana Kuznetsova in 2005 and Kerber in 2017.
