WSPF (1000 AM Broadcasting, AM) was a radio station licensed to Hickory, North Carolina, known as "Channel One Radio". The station had a 5,000-watt daytime-only signal, with a transmitter on Tate Boulevard and studios at Second Avenue Southeast and North Carolina Highway 127, N.C. 127. History WSPF signed on in October 1963 with a rock and roll format. In March 1982, the format changed to Country music, modern country. On August 8, 1985, morning DJ Gary "Mountain Man" McMahan began raising funds to rescue 4-year-old Barney the Bison, Buffalo, who weighed . Barney escaped from a farm in Franklin County, North Carolina, attacked a car, and was purchased for $1 by E.B. Harris, who vowed to slaughter the animal unless someone raised the money to take care of him. McMahan made Barney his show's mascot and vowed to raise $1000. AM Broadcasting
AM broadcasting is radio broadcasting using amplitude modulation (AM) transmissions. It was the first method developed for making audio radio transmissions, and is still used worldwide, primarily for medium wave (also known as "AM band") transmissions, but also on the longwave and shortwave radio bands. The earliest experimental AM transmissions began in the early 1900s. However, widespread AM broadcasting was not established until the 1920s, following the development of vacuum tube receivers and transmitters. AM radio remained the dominant method of broadcasting for the next 30 years, a period called the "Golden Age of Radio", until television broadcasting became widespread in the 1950s and received most of the programming previously carried by radio. The station is currently owned by Pacific Broadcast Group, Inc. and identifies itself as "63 Big Ways." The format recreates a format resembling a 1960s Top 40 station by using the jingles and other airchecks from WAYS (which was the original "Big Ways"), a legendary Charlotte Top 40 station from the 1960s. Since the callsign and frequency of the original "Big Ways" was different, the jingles and airchecks used are those that feature the words "Big Ways" rather than the actual callsign or frequency.
