WSJP (1640 AM) is a radio station licensed to Sussex, Wisconsin and owned by Relevant Radio. It broadcasts Catholic-based religious programming; along with WSJP-FM (100.1), it is one of two Relevant Radio stations in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. History WSJP began as the "expanded band" twin to a station broadcasting on the standard AM band, which originally signed on in 1979 as WCQL (Waukesha County Quality Listening), a highly directional daytime-only station licensed to Pewaukee at 1370 AM. After a failure to generate adequate ratings or revenue, the station's owners, George and Mary Scoufis, experimented with a contemporary Christian music format in the early 1980s until it was sold to a group of investors. Sussex is a village in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, United States, about northwest of Milwaukee and north of Waukesha. The village is at an elevation of 930 feet. Special Temporary Authority (STA) in U.S. broadcast law is a type of broadcast license which temporarily allows a broadcast station to operate outside of its normal technical or legal parameters. In the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) station database (CDBS), broadcast STA applications have a prefix of BSTA (general), BLSTA (legal), BESTA (engineering), or BLESTA (both). HD Radio (HDR) is a trademark for an in-band on-channel (IBOC) digital radio broadcast technology. It generally simulcasts an existing analog radio station in digital format with less noise and with additional text information. HD Radio is used primarily by AM and FM radio stations in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with a few implementations outside North America. The term "on channel" is a misnomer because the system actually broadcasts on the ordinarily unused channels adjacent to an existing radio station's allocation.
