WROV-TV
WROV-TV, UHF Channel 27 in Roanoke, Virginia, was an early TV station in Roanoke and the second oldest (having signed on shortly after WSLS-TV). Established February 15, 1953, it left the air on July 13, 1953, becoming the first UHF television station in the United States to have ceased operations. History In 1950s, the Federal Communications Commission had allocated channels 7, 10, and 27 for Roanoke and 13 for nearby Lynchburg, Virginia. Shenandoah Life Insurance Company (the owners of WSLS radio) obtained the channel 10 license and launched WSLS-TV on December 11, 1952; Roanoke Radio (owners of WROV radio) signed on soon after with Channel 27. Lynchburg Broadcasting signed on Channel 13, WLVA-TV, on February 8, 1953. WDBJ (channel 7) is a television station licensed to Roanoke, Virginia, United States, serving as the CBS affiliate for the Roanoke– Lynchburg market. WFXR (channel 27) is a television station licensed to Roanoke, Virginia, United States, serving as the Fox affiliate for the Roanoke– Lynchburg market. It is owned by Nexstar Media Group alongside Lynchburg-licensed CW owned-and-operated station WWCW (channel 21). Both stations share studios at the Valleypointe office park on Valleypoint Parkway in Hollins (with a Roanoke mailing address), while WFXR's transmitter is located on Poor Mountain in unincorporated southwestern Roanoke County. Even though WFXR maintains a digital signal of its own, the signal's full-powered broadcasting radius does not cover much of the eastern portion of the market. WRFT-TV, known as WRLU from 1974 to 1975, was a television station on channel 27 in Roanoke, Virginia, United States. Affiliated with ABC through its existence, the station telecast from March 1966 to April 1974 and again from September 1974 to February 1975. Financial problems caused the station's demise after having experienced a mass staff walkout in 1974; the station was more than $1 million in debt when it closed. WRFT-TV operated from studios on Little Brushy Mountain in Salem and, in later years, a transmitter on Poor Mountain. KCTY was a television station in Kansas City, Missouri, United States. It broadcast on ultra high frequency ( UHF) channel 25 from June 6, 1953, to February 28, 1954, and was the second television station to begin broadcasting in the Kansas City area, after WDAF-TV. KCTY was an affiliate of the DuMont Television Network; and originally owned by the Empire Coil Company, which had pioneered UHF telecasting, DuMont purchased the station outright at the end of 1953 and operated it for two months as a study in the problems of struggling UHF stations nationwide before concluding that there was no path to economic viability. WFIR (960 kHz "WFIR 960 AM - 107.3 FM") is a commercial AM radio station licensed to Roanoke, Virginia and serving the Roanoke Valley. It is owned and operated by Mel Wheeler, Inc. and airs a News/Talk radio format. WFIR broadcasts at 10,000 watts non-directional by day. But at night, to avoid interfering with other stations on AM 960, it reduces power to 5000 watts and uses a directional antenna. WFIR's studios and offices are on Electric Road in Roanoke. The All-Channel Receiver Act of 1962 (ACRA) (), commonly known as the All-Channels Act, was passed by the United States Congress in 1961, to allow the Federal Communications Commission to require that all television set manufacturers must include UHF tuners, so that new UHF-band TV stations (then channels 14 to 83) could be received by the public.
