WQSL (92.3 FM), also known as "The River", is a variety hits radio station licensed to Jacksonville, North Carolina. The station simulcasts on WQZL 101.1 FM Belhaven. History WQSL was "Q92" when it was Top 40 and then it was a Hot AC In the early 1990s it was "Whistle 92.3". From 1995 to 2000 it was "All Hit 92.3" Then the station switched to Hip hop. On April 30, 1997, Cumulus Broadcasting announced its purchase of WAAV, WWQQ, WXQR, and WQSL. WQSL was rhythmic CHR and its name was "The Beat of Carolina" until the end of 2006, at which time it changed to rhythmic adult contemporary with the name "The Party Station". WQZL (101.1 FM), also known as "The River", is a radio station licensed to serve Belhaven, North Carolina. It has a format of variety hits as "92.3 & 101.1 The River". The station's antenna is in Washington, but the signal reaches New Bern, Greenville, and Washington, North Carolina. History WKJA-FM signed on June 1, 1981, at 92.1 FM. The original Effective Radiated Power was 3000 watts. WKJA-FM was originally licensed to Roach Communications, Robert Ray "Bob" Roach, President. The original format was light CHR, but Adult Contemporary and Country formats also took occasional turns throughout the 1980s. The station was sold to Winfas in 1984, whose other holdings at the time included WRCM/WJNC in Jacksonville, NC and WAMV/WCNV in Amherst, Virginia. WWQQ-FM (101.3 MHz) is a country music formatted radio station located in Wilmington, North Carolina. It advertises itself as "Cape Fear's Country Leader". History From its sign-on in 1969 until 1978, the call letters of this station were WMFD-FM, and it was partially simulcast with sister station WMFD. That year, Village Broadcasting of Chapel Hill bought the station from the Dunlea family, changed the call letters to WWQQ and started a country music format on the station. WAAV
WAAV (980 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a News/Talk format. Licensed to Leland, North Carolina, United States, it serves the Wilmington area. The station is currently owned by Cumulus Media. History WAAV debuted as an FM station in 1972 at 102.7, and would remain there until 1981, when Cape Fear Broadcasting from Fayetteville purchased WAAV and WGNI. At that time, the station flipped from FM to AM 1340; in 1984 the station moved to 980, where it remains today. The previous occupant of the 980 frequency was top 40 WKLM, part of the Harold Thoms Group. Because of FCC regulations regarding the number of stations one owner could have, WAAV had to be sold in 1988. Don Ansell, who was hosting the morning show "Talk Of The Town", bought the station and ran it until selling it to Cumulus in 1997. Cumulus Media Networks was an American radio network owned and operated by Cumulus Media. From 2011 until its merger with Westwood One, it controlled many of the radio assets formerly belonging to the American Broadcasting Company (ABC), which was broken up in 2007; Cumulus owned the portion of the network that was purchased by Citadel Broadcasting that year. It draws an adult audience between the ages of 25-49 with an Urban Adult Contemporary format since its inception by Satellite Music Network in 1972. In January 2010, Citadel Broadcasting rebranded this network as MyFavStation, but a month later, it was reverted to its original legacy branding.
