WQNY
WQNY (103.7 FM) is a radio station broadcasting a country music format. Licensed to Ithaca, New York, United States, the station serves that market and occasionally has appeared in the Elmira- Corning ratings, as the station can be heard well in the eastern and northeastern parts of that market. The station is owned by the Cayuga Radio Group subsidiary of Saga Communications. History WQNY was the flagship station of the Rural Radio Network (having replaced the station now known as WYXL) and signed on June 6, 1948, as WVFC. WVFC (later WRRA and then WEIV) served as flagship of the network from 1948 to 1981, when the network split up. On December 21, 1982, the station changed its call sign to the current WQNY. Q-Country 103.7 is currently formatted as a country station, with local personalities either live or voicetracking from 6 am to 7 pm weekdays and most of the weekend daytime hours also. WHCU (870 AM) is a commercial radio station in Ithaca, New York, that programs a news/talk radio format. The station has been owned by the Cayuga Radio Group subsidiary of Saga Communications since 2005. Programming is simulcast on FM translator W249DW 97.7 MHz. Rural Radio Network
The Rural Radio Network (RRN) was an interconnected group of six commercial FM broadcasting, FM radio stations spread across upstate New York and operated from Ithaca, New York -- the first all-radio, no-wireline network in the world. It began operation in 1948 as an innovative Broadcasting, broadcast service to the farm, agricultural community, but competition from television—and a lack of affordable, well-performing FM receivers—caused the founders' original business plan to fail. The stations changed ownership, as well as Radio formats, several times in futile attempts to achieve profitability. Perhaps the group's most notable owner was the Christian Broadcasting Network, headed by televangelist Pat Robertson, which acquired the stations through a corporate donation in 1969. WNYY (1470 AM) is a radio station broadcasting an oldies format. Licensed to Ithaca, New York, United States, the station serves the Ithaca area. The station is owned by the Cayuga Radio Group subsidiary of Saga Communications and features programming from CNN Radio. History WNYY, most commonly known as "Pure Oldies 94.1" was owned by a local company as part of an AM/FM combo with WQNY 103.7 FM, then under the call letters of WTKO and featuring an oldies format. The AM/FM combo was one of two in the Ithaca market - the other being what is now co-owned WYXL 97.3 FM and WHCU 870 AM. Nielsen Audio (formerly Arbitron) is a consumer research company in the United States that collects listener data on radio broadcasting audiences. It was founded as the American Research Bureau by Jim Seiler in 1949 and became national by merging with Los Angeles-based Coffin, Cooper, and Clay in the early 1950s.
