WQKI-FM (95.7 MHz) is a commercial radio station licensed to Orangeburg, South Carolina. It airs a classic hip hop radio format and is owned by Community Broadcasters, LLC. WQKI-FM has a construction permit issued by the Federal Communications Commission to move its frequency to 95.7 MHz and slightly increase its effective radiated power (ERP) to 4,000 watts from the current output of 3,100 watts. History The station went on the air as WIGL on December 8, 1987. On November 7, 2003, the station changed its call sign to the current WQKI. Classic hip hop is a music radio format focusing primarily on hip hop music from the 1980s, 1990s, and the early to mid-2000s. Although stations with such a format date back as far as 2004, the format was first popularized in October 2014, after Radio One dropped a poorly performing news radio format from its Houston station KROI in favor of classic hip-hop. After attracting a dramatic increase in ratings, Radio One began to emulate the station's format and branding in other markets. At the same time, other major radio broadcasters began to introduce classic hip-hop stations in selected markets. Community Broadcasters, LLC is a Watertown, New York based radio holding group that owns radio stations in its own market and surrounding areas. It was founded by media executives Bruce Mittman and Jim Leven, and started out in 2006 by buying stations owned by Clancy-Mance Communications, Inc. Effective radiated power (ERP), synonymous with equivalent radiated power, is an IEEE standardized definition of directional radio frequency (RF) power, such as that emitted by a radio transmitter.
