WPLY (defunct)
WPLY (960 AM) was a radio station licensed to serve Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania, United States. It was owned by Nassau Broadcasting Partners. It broadcast a news/talk radio format, simulcasting with WVPO (840 AM) in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. It was assigned the WPLY call letters by the Federal Communications Commission on March 10, 2005. It originally signed on in April 1981 as WPCN. The locally-owned community station was notably innovative at the time for installing serial #1 of the Continental Model 314R1 PWM transmitter, which ushered in an era of enhanced audio fidelity and efficient, power-saving operation. (It has since been replaced with a Harris Gates One.) The four towers, employing elevated feeds, were guyed with non-conductive Phillystran cable, also innovative at the time. Mount Pocono is a borough in Monroe County, Pennsylvania. It is located nearly centered in the southernmost county of five in the northeastern corner that are part of the Pocono Mountains. The borough serves as a local highway nexus, and sees a lot of tourist traffic making use of resources in the region. As of the 2020 census, the borough population was 3,083 residents. Geography Mount Pocono is located at (41.123012, −75.359574), and is nearly centered in Monroe County—the most southerly and centered county of the five counties containing portions of the Pocono Mountains of Northeastern Pennsylvania. WVPO (840 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a country music format. Licensed to Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, United States, the station serves the Stroudsburg area. The station is currently owned by Seven Mountains Media, through licensee Southern Belle, LLC. History WVPO began operation as WHAB in 1947. A year later, the station changed its call letters to WVPO "The Voice of the Poconos." The station offered a blend of local news and popular music. The station moved studio locations after a devastating fire hit Main Street on July 29, 1958. The station was located above the Rea and Derick Drug Store and relocated temporarily to the transmitter site stop Godfrey's Ridge. In 1959, studios were moved to 22 South 6th Street, in the building that formerly housed Stroudsburg's Post Office. The Pocono Mountains, commonly referred to as the Poconos , are a geographical, geological, and cultural region in Northeastern Pennsylvania. A public file (or public inspection file) is a collection of documents required by a broadcasting authority to be maintained by all broadcast stations under its jurisdiction. Such a file is required by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States, and by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). The public inspection file must be maintained at the station's main studio and it must be accessible to anyone during business hours. Stations are required to provide copies at the requester's expense, or if the facility is outside of the community of license, provide copies via mail at their own expense.
