It is a non-commercial, listener-supported radio station owned and operated by the Montrose Broadcasting Corporation, a non-profit organization founded by W. Douglas Roe. History WPEL, a 1,000 watt daytime station at 800 AM, has been on the air since May 30, 1953. It broadcasts Southern gospel music and Bible teaching programs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. WPEL-FM, at 96.5 FM, began broadcasting on June 5, 1961. At 57,000 watts, it is one of the region's most powerful radio stations. Located about halfway between Scranton, Pennsylvania and Binghamton, New York, WPEL-FM serves a potential audience of more than 800,000 listeners in 16 counties of Northeastern Pennsylvania and New York's Southern Tier. WPEL is a religious formatted radio station playing Southern gospel music in Montrose, Pennsylvania. It is a non-commercial, listener-supported radio station owned and operated by the Montrose Broadcasting Corporation, a non-profit organization founded by W. Douglas Roe. Mr. Roe was the original licensee and died in 1984. WPEL (AM) broadcasts on a frequency of 800 kHz AM with 1,000 watts of power daytime and 135 watts of power during nighttime hours; 800 AM is a clear-channel frequency, on which XEROK-AM is the dominant Class A station. History WPEL has been on the air since May 30, 1953. The funding of the station came, in part from the Montrose Bible conference, of which W. Douglas Roe was the executive director. Montrose is a borough in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, United States, south-southeast of Binghamton, New York and north by west of Scranton. The land is elevated approximately 1,400 feet (427 m) above sea level. It is the Susquehanna County seat. History Montrose was laid out in 1812 in an area of Pennsylvania historically associated with the Indigenous Susquehannock people. The first non-Indigenous settler in 1800 was a Revolutionary War officer, Captain Bartlett Hinds, who traveled from Long Island, NY with his stepson, Isaac Post. Upon seeing the area's natural beauty and potential, he returned to NY to bring his family to Pennsylvania.
