WOJB-FM
WOJB is a National Public Radio member on 88.9 MHz, and serves northwestern Wisconsin from the Lac Courte Oreilles Reservation southeast of Hayward, Wisconsin, United States. Founded in 1982 with the intention of bridging the culture gap between the Native American population in the area and their non-Native neighbors in a time of heightened racial tension, the station is now a fixture of the northwestern Wisconsin airwaves, presenting a variety of programming, much of it presenting the culture of the local Ojibwa community and the wider Anishinaabe culture. The station also webcasts its programming via its website. Hayward, Wisconsin
Hayward is a city in Sawyer County, Wisconsin, United States, next to the Namekagon River. The population was 2,318 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sawyer County. The city is surrounded by the Town of Hayward. History Early history Hayward was "named for Anthony Judson Hayward, a lumberman who located the site for building a sawmill, around which the town grew." Logging began in the late 1850s. Loggers came from Cortland County, New York, Carroll County, New Hampshire, Orange County, Vermont, Down East Maine in what is now Washington County, Maine and Hancock County, Maine. These were "Yankee" migrants, descended from the English Puritans who had settled New England during the 1600s. They were mostly members of the Congregational Church. Lac Courte Oreilles Band Of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians
The Lac Courte Oreilles Tribe ( oj, Odaawaa-zaaga'iganiing) is one of six federally recognized bands of Ojibwe people located in present-day Wisconsin. It had 7,275 enrolled members as of 2010. The band is based at the Lac Courte Oreilles Indian Reservation in northwestern Wisconsin, which surrounds Lac Courte Oreilles (''Odaawaa-zaaga'igan'' in the Ojibwe language, meaning "Ottawa Lake"). The main reservation's land is in west-central Sawyer County, but two small plots of off-reservation trust land are located in Rusk, Burnett, and Washburn counties. The reservation was established in 1854 by the second Treaty of La Pointe. The Lac Courte Oreille ceded land under a treaty they signed with the United States in 1837, the 1842 Treaty of La Pointe, and the first 1854 Treaty of La Pointe. Anishinaabe
The Anishinaabeg (adjectival: Anishinaabe) are a group of culturally related Indigenous peoples present in the Great Lakes region of Canada and the United States. They include the Ojibwe (including Saulteaux and Oji-Cree), Odawa, Potawatomi, Mississaugas, Nipissing and Algonquin peoples. The Anishinaabe speak ''Anishinaabemowin'', or Anishinaabe languages that belong to the Algonquian language family. At the time of first contact with Europeans they lived in the Northeast Woodlands and Subarctic, and some have since spread to the Great Plains. The word Anishinaabe translates to "people from whence lowered". Reserve is a census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Couderay, Sawyer County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 429 at the 2010 census. Geography Reserve is located at (45.859877, -91.372722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 53.7 square miles (139.1 km2), of which, 53.0 square miles (137.3 km2) of it is land and 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2) of it (1.30%) is water.
