WOAD (1300 AM broadcasting, AM) is a radio station licensed to Jackson, Mississippi, Jackson with an urban gospel format. WOAD is owned by Alpha Media through licensee Alpha Media Licensee LLC. Along with five other sister stations, its studios are located in Ridgeland, Mississippi, Ridgeland, a suburb of Jackson, while the transmitter tower is in the northside of Jackson. History The 1300 kHz frequency was assigned the WRBC call letters for several years. Around 1978, the transmitter site was rebuilt and call letters were changed to WKXI. In March 1996, the WOAD call letters and gospel format moved to the more powerful 1300 kHz, after swapping frequencies with then-sister station WJQS, WKXI. On January 11, 2004, WOAD started simulcasting on FM—at 105.9. July 2, 2009, WOAD dropped its FM simulcast and resumed AM-only broadcasting. WJQS (1400 AM) is a sports talk radio station in Jackson, Mississippi, owned by Alpha Media through licensee Alpha Media Licensee LLC. Along with five other sister stations, its studios are located in Ridgeland, a suburb of Jackson, while the transmitter tower is in Jackson just north of downtown. History For many years, this station was called "Fun Country - 1400 WJQS". Television news anchor Bert Case began his career in broadcasting at this station. In the 1960s, the station's studios were moved to a small building on Terry Road, near Jackson State University. Ann Zimmerman owned the station, and the format was country-Western music. News was broadcast every 20 minutes. In 1983, WJQS was sold to John Pembroke who switched the call letters to WOAD and changed the format to black gospel. Ridgeland, Mississippi
Ridgeland is a city in Madison County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 24,047 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson, Mississippi metropolitan area. History In 1805, the Choctaw Indian Agency, headed by Silas Dinsmoor, was located in what is now known as Ridgeland. There is also a neighborhood called Dinsmor in Ridgeland. The structure was then called Turner Brashear's Stand until about 1850. It was adapted for use as a hotel named the King's Inn. During the American Civil War, King's Inn was used as a headquarters by General Stephen Lee. Afterward, it again operated as a hotel until 1896, when it was destroyed by fire. In 1853, James B. Yellowley founded the community of Yellowley's Crossing (later named Jessamine after his wife). In 1896, Edward Treakle and Gordon Nichols, two real estate developers from Chicago, purchased the land from Yellowley and established the Highland Colony Company. Urban/contemporary gospel is a modern subgenre of gospel music. Although the style developed gradually, early forms are generally dated to the 1970s, and the genre was well established by the end of the 1980s. AM broadcasting is radio broadcasting using amplitude modulation (AM) transmissions. It was the first method developed for making audio radio transmissions, and is still used worldwide, primarily for medium wave (also known as "AM band") transmissions, but also on the longwave and shortwave radio bands.
