WNAX-FM (104.1 MHz, "The Wolf") is a radio station broadcasting a country format. Licensed to Yankton, South Dakota, it serves the Yankton, Vermillion, and Sioux City areas. The station is currently owned by Saga Communications, Inc. History The station's original construction permit was granted to Oyate, Inc. on March 16, 1973; the call sign KQHU was issued on April 20, and the station signed on August 9. KQHU was formally licensed on June 11, 1974. In its early years, KQHU programmed popular standards and beautiful music; by 1976, it had pivoted to a blend of top 40 and oldies and was affiliated with the ABC Contemporary Network. The station evolved to adult contemporary by 1984. WNAX (570 AM) is a radio station in Yankton, South Dakota, currently owned by Saga Communications, Inc., which broadcasts a news/talk format. WNAX broadcasts at 5,000 watts around the clock from a tower in eastern Yankton. Due to its location near the bottom of the AM dial, transmitter power, and South Dakota's flat land (with near-perfect ground conductivity) the station's 5,000-watt signal provides at least secondary coverage during the day to most of the eastern half of South Dakota, much of western Iowa, and most of the densely populated portion of Nebraska. In addition to its home markets of Sioux City and Sioux Falls, WNAX provides a strong grade B signal to Omaha and Lincoln. Under the right conditions, its daytime signal penetrates as far south as Kansas City, as far north as Fargo and well east of Des Moines with a good radio. Yankton is a city in and the county seat of Yankton County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 15,411 at the 2020 census, and it is the principal city of the Yankton Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes the entirety of Yankton County and which had an estimated population of 23,297 as of July 1, 2021. As the first capital of Dakota Territory, it was named after the Yankton tribe of Western Dakota people; Yankton is derived from the Dakota word ''I-hank-ton-wan'' ("the end village"). Roy Hampton Park (15 September 1910 – 25 October 1993) was an American media executive and entrepreneur. He is known for creating the Duncan Hines brand of packaged food products, and for his television/radio/newspaper conglomerate, Park Communications. He created the Park Foundation, which has funded many programs in his name at Ithaca College, Cornell University, and North Carolina State University.
