WLKK (107.7 FM) is an American radio station located in Wethersfield, New York. The station is owned by Audacy, Inc. It operates from studios at Audacy's Buffalo offices in Amherst, New York, with a transmitter located southwest of Warsaw. (For legal purposes, WLKK's official studio was shared with WCJW in Warsaw, a legal fiction which ended with the elimination of the Main Studio Rule by the FCC in 2017). Perhaps at least partly because of the station's unique ability to cover both the Buffalo and the Rochester radio markets with one rimshot signal, WLKK is known for its frequent format changes. WCJW (1140 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station licensed to Warsaw, New York and serving Western New York. It is owned by Lloyd Lane, Inc, and calls itself "CJ Country." The radio studios and transmitter are on Merchant Road in Warsaw. WCJW broadcasts at 8,000 watts during daytime hours using a directional antenna with a two-tower array. The Rural Radio Network (RRN) was an interconnected group of six commercial FM broadcasting, FM radio stations spread across upstate New York and operated from Ithaca, New York -- the first all-radio, no-wireline network in the world. It began operation in 1948 as an innovative Broadcasting, broadcast service to the farm, agricultural community, but competition from television—and a lack of affordable, well-performing FM receivers—caused the founders' original business plan to fail. The stations changed ownership, as well as Radio formats, several times in futile attempts to achieve profitability. In radio and television broadcasting a rimshot is a station that attempts to reach a larger media market from a distant suburban, exurban, or even rural location. The term is primarily used with FM stations, and mainly in North America. The name derives not from the sound of a rimshot in music, but rather from basketball, where the ball hits the rim of the basket, and may or may not go in. Rimshot stations are often at a disadvantage compared to higher-strength signals in a market. Many rimshot operators attempt to serve the larger market with a signal that has deficiencies in the intended listening area, especially on the far side from where it is transmitted. Many (if not most) rimshot stations are "move-ins", having moved to about halfway between their city of license (which they are legally required to cover and serve) and the metro area which they actually care about.
