Classic hip hop is a music radio format focusing primarily on hip hop music from the 1980s, 1990s, and the early to mid-2000s. Although stations with such a format date back as far as 2004, the format was first popularized in October 2014, after Radio One dropped a poorly performing news radio format from its Houston station KROI in favor of classic hip-hop. After attracting a dramatic increase in ratings, Radio One began to emulate the station's format and branding in other markets. At the same time, other major radio broadcasters began to introduce classic hip-hop stations in selected markets. WHJT (93.5 FM broadcasting, FM, "93.5 The Legend) is an American radio station city of license, licensed to serve Kearney Park, Mississippi, United States. The station was owned and operated by Mississippi College until 2017. Its studios and transmitter were based on campus from the Aven Fine Arts Building. Mississippi College sold WHJT to New South Radio in March 2017. The station's new 12,000-watt transmitter is located off Highway 49, in Pocahontas, Mississippi, Pocahontas. Its new studio is located at 265 Highpoint Drive, in Ridgeland, Mississippi, Ridgeland. WHJT had previously broadcast a contemporary Christian radio format, format to the Jackson, Mississippi, area from Easter Sunday 1989 until midnight on July 31, 2017. Utica, Mississippi
Utica is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 820 at the 2010 census, down from 966 at the 2000 census. Utica is part of the Jackson Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Utica was originally an area known as Cane Ridge. In 1837, it was given the name Utica at the suggestion of the then postmaster, Ozias Osborn, who came from Utica, New York. The town was incorporated in 1880. Utica was located on the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad. A weekly newspaper, the ''Herald'', was established in 1897. In the early 1900s, Utica had several churches, eight hotels, a public school for white students, and an industrial college for black students. Agriculture consisted of watermelons, cotton and timber. The settlement had a sawmill, three cotton gins, and a brick plant. The population in 1907 was nearly 1,000. Stunting is a type of publicity stunt in radio broadcasting, where a station—abruptly and often without advance announcement—begins to air content that is seemingly uncharacteristic compared to what is normally played. Stunting is typically used to generate publicity and audience attention for upcoming changes to a station's programming, such as new branding, format, or as a soft launch for a newly-established station. Occasionally, a stunt may be purely intended as publicity or a protest, and not actually result in a major programming change. Stunts often involve a loop of a single song, or an interim format (such as the discography of a specific artist, Christmas music, a specific theme, or novelty songs), which may sometimes include hints towards the station's new format or branding.
