WJLS-FM (99.5 MHz) is a commercial radio station licensed to Beckley, West Virginia, serving Southeastern West Virginia and Southwestern Virginia with a country music format. The station, which utilized the call letters WBKW from 1957 to 1990, was the second FM radio station to go on the air in West Virginia, and is the oldest to still exist. WJLS (560 Hertz, kHz) is a commercial AM radio, AM Radio broadcasting, radio station licensed to Beckley, West Virginia, serving Southeastern West Virginia with talk radio programming during the daytime and country music in evenings and overnights. The sister station to WJLS-FM, it is owned and operated by WVRC Media, who bought both stations in the 2010s from First Media Radio, LLC. The station began broadcasting in 1939, the first radio station in Beckley, and was a CBS affiliate from 1943 to 1990. History The station was founded in 1939 by Joe L. Smith Jr., the first radio station in Beckley. It used the tag "The Personality Station". When it became a CBS affiliate during World War II, Beckley was the smallest community with an affiliate station. Beckley is a city in and the county seat of Raleigh County, West Virginia, United States. It was founded on April 4, 1838. This city is the home of the West Virginia University Institute of Technology or West Virginia University, Beckley Campus. History The area surrounding Beckley was long home to many indigenous peoples. Early encounters describe the land as being an ancestral home of the Catawba-speaking Moneton people, who referred to the surrounding area as Okahok Amai, and were allies of the Monacan people. The Moneton's Catawba speaking neighbors to the south, the Tutelo (since absorbed into the Seneca-Cayuga Nation) may have absorbed surviving Moneton communities, and claim the area as ancestral lands. West Virginia MetroNews is a radio network heard on many radio stations throughout the State of West Virginia. The network is owned by the West Virginia Radio Corporation. West Virginia MetroNews offers a mix of news and talk. It held the rights to live play-by-play coverage of West Virginia University Mountaineers sports games, which it marketed under the DBA name "Mountaineer Sports Network", but lost these rights following the end of the 2012/13 basketball season. The network also provides coverage of select high school football and basketball games that happen in West Virginia. Availability The network is carried on all West Virginia Radio Corporation owned stations, and is syndicated to stations in markets where WVRC does not do business.
