WJEK (95.3 MHz) is a commercial FM radio station broadcasting a Contemporary Christian radio format, known as "Christian FM 95.3." Licensed to Rantoul, Illinois, United States, the station serves the Champaign-Urbana metropolitan area. The station is currently owned by SJ Broadcasting, LLC. History The station went on the air as WRTL-FM on 1979-07-30. on 1984-11-21, the station changed its call sign to WRBZ-FM, on 1988-07-01 to WZNF, on 2000-01-03 to WBNB, on 2002-03-01 to WEVX, on 2006-09-18 to WMYE, on 2007-09-14 to WLFH, and on 2010-11-08 to the current WJEK. WGKC (105.9 FM, "U.S. 105.9") is a country music radio station licensed to Mahomet, Illinois and broadcasting in the Champaign-Urbana, Illinois radio market. The station is owned by SJ Broadcasting, LLC. History WGKC was originally WHZT and was started by Adlai Stevenson IV, grandson of former presidential candidate Adlai Stevenson II, in 1990. WHZT was later owned and operated by Odyssey Communications, Inc. Oddyssey ran the syndicated Z-Rock format. Z-Rock was known as the station in Champaign-Urbana with the hearse. Odyssey Communications sold WHZT in 1996 to Liberty Radio II, Inc. The new owners dropped the Z-Rock format and the WHZT call letters. On November 15, 1996, WHZT became Classic Rock 105.9 WGKC. Rantoul, Illinois
Rantoul is a village in Champaign County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,371 at the 2020 census. History The community was named after Robert Rantoul, Jr., a U.S. representative from Massachusetts, and a director of the Illinois Central Railroad. Rantoul was laid out in 1854 for the Illinois Central Railroad by John Penfield. A post office was established in 1856 as Rantoul Station; the name was changed to Rantoul in May 1862. In 1917, Rantoul was chosen by the United States Army to be the site of Chanute Field, due to its proximity to the Illinois Central railroad and the War Department's ground school at the University of Illinois. In the 1930s, Chanute Field grew, dominating the local economy as thousands of airmen were stationed there to train recruits. WDWS (1400 AM) is a commercial radio station in Champaign, Illinois, calling itself "Newstalk Radio 1400 & 93.9FM DWS." It airs a News/Talk radio format and is owned by ''The News-Gazette'', the primary daily newspaper in the Champaign-Urbana Metropolitan Area. The radio studios and offices are at the newspaper's headquarters on Fox Drive in Champaign. WDWS is powered at 1,000 watts using a non-directional antenna. The transmitter is on South Neil Street (U.S. Route 45) at West Windsor Road. WIXT is an AM radio station broadcasting on a frequency of 1230 kHz and licensed to the city of Little Falls, New York. Owned by Galaxy Communications, the station airs a variety hits format under the branding ''Tony FM 99.1''. History of WIXT WIXT signed on June 22, 1952 under the call letters WLFH (the call letters stood for Little Falls and nearby Herkimer, two of its primary communities).
