History The station began in 1947 as a local station for the South Shore region, owned by James D. Asher, and later by his son Jay. For much of its history, WJDA provided talk programming and (in its last years) ABC Radio's Unforgettable Favorites satellite soft AC format, operating under the branding "Radio ''your'' way." Among its on-air personalities were Herb Fontaine, Roy Lind, Joe Catalano, Win Bettinson, Ken Coleman, Don Kent and Mike Logan. WESX (1230 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a religious and multi-cultural format, licensed to broadcast in the Nahant, Massachusetts, precinct. The station is owned by Real Media Group, LLC. Programming is in Spanish, Portuguese, Creole, and English. The transmitter is located in Lynn, Massachusetts, with studios located in Chelsea. History WESX made its debut on December 10, 1939, at 1200 kHz on the AM band, with studios in Salem, Massachusetts; the transmitter was in Marblehead. The station's original owner was Charles W. Phelan, who had been the director of sales for the Yankee Network in Boston from 1928 to early 1939. The station's first program manager also came from the Yankee Network— Van D. Ken Coleman
Kenneth Robert Coleman (April 22, 1925 – August 21, 2003) was an American radio and television sportscaster for more than four decades (1947–1989). Early life Coleman was born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1925, the son of William (a salesman) and his wife Frances. The family subsequently moved to Dorchester, Massachusetts, and then to nearby Quincy, where he was raised. Coleman graduated from North Quincy High School in 1943. He was a pitcher on the North Quincy High School baseball team, and subsequently played in the semi-pro Park League. But he had dreams of being a sports broadcaster from the time he was a boy, when he enjoyed listening to the games on radio. After serving in the U.S. Army, where he was a sergeant during World War II, Coleman took oratory courses for one year at Curry College, and then broke into broadcasting in Rutland, Vermont, in 1947, working for station WSYB. Islip ( ) is a town in Suffolk County, New York, United States, on the south shore of Long Island. The population was 335,543 at the 2010 census, making it the fourth most populous city or town in the state. The Town of Islip also contains a smaller, unincorporated hamlet and census-designated place named Islip. History Matthias Nicoll relocated to New York from Islip, Northamptonshire, England, in 1664. History The station, originally owned by South Shore Broadcasting, signed on as WBIC on October 16, 1959. Since the station occupied a Canadian clear-channel frequency, it was required to sign-off at sundown. Bob 'Bobaloo' Lewis, who would later gain fame as one of the “All Americans” on 77 WABC Radio in New York City, was one of the original DJs on WBIC. Hurricane Irene was a large and destructive tropical cyclone which affected much of the Caribbean and East Coast of the United States during late August 2011. The ninth named storm, first hurricane, and first major hurricane of the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season, Irene originated from a well-defined Atlantic tropical wave that began showing signs of organization east of the Lesser Antilles. Due to development of atmospheric convection and a closed center of circulation, the system was designated as Tropical Storm Irene on August 20, 2011. Don Kent (meteorologist)
Donald Edward Kent (September 29, 1917 – March 2, 2010) was an American radio and television weather forecaster for several decades in the Boston, Massachusetts area. He was known as "Boston's first TV Weatherman." Early life Kent was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, and was raised in the Wollaston section of Quincy. He graduated from North Quincy High School and attended MIT. Career Kent started doing weather forecasts on radio and TV in the Boston area in 1937. He developed and applied his weather forecasting skills while serving in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II era, where he achieved the rank of chief petty officer. After the war and for many years, he appeared on WBZ (AM) radio and WBZ-TV. After retiring from WBZ in 1983, Kent started a new career as the weather forecaster for Cape Cod radio station WQRC.
