WIRI (105.5 MHz) is an FM radio station broadcasting a classic country music format. Licensed to Nekoosa, Wisconsin, United States, the station serves the Central Wisconsin area. The station is currently owned by Civic Media LLC. History The station went on the air as KZZA on July 22, 2003. Three days later, the station changed its call sign to WUSP, and on March 5, 2008, to WRCW. The call sign became WLJY on September 16, 2013. with the format change from oldies as "Kool Gold 105.5" to an adult contemporary format as "Y105.5". WLJY became WIRI on May 1, 2021. On June 23, 2021, WIRI flipped to classic country as "Country Legends 24/7". On August 3, 2022, It was announced that Civic Media will acquire WIRI. Nekoosa, Wisconsin
Nekoosa is a city in Wood County, Wisconsin, United States. Its name derives from the Ho-Chunk word, "Nįįkuusra", "Nakrusa", or "Nįkusara" which translates to "running water". The population was 2,580 at the 2010 census. History An article dated March 16, 1916 from the long defunct newspaper ''The Nekoosa Tribune'' detailing the early history of Nekoosa may be found at the Wisconsin Historical Society web site. It is a letter written by a resident to Nekoosa High School students to support them writing a history term paper. Point Basse "Five rapids covering a distance of about three miles in this area were referred to as Nekoosa (swift water) by the Chippewa Indians, who made their campground on high Swallow Rock overlooking the rapids. WXCO (1230 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a progressive talk format, with programming from the statewide Civic Media Network. Licensed to Wausau, Wisconsin, United States, the station serves the Wausau-Stevens Point area. History The station's original call letters were WHVF (for owner, Hilding V. Foreen), signing on in 1953 with 250 watts of power, featuring a variety format with local personalities Buck Leverton, Hoots Roberts, Piano Roll Harold (Harold Golding), and Howie Stieber. The call letters remained in place until the Spring of 1966, when the current WXCO call letters were put in place by new owners, The Post Corporation. In 1973, the Station was sold to Seehafer Broadcasting, and an FM sister station, WYCO, was added in early 1985, which was later sold to NRG Media in 2006.
