WINZ (AM)
WINZ (940 kHz) is a sports formatted AM radio station that serves Miami-Fort Lauderdale and their suburbs. The station primarily airs syndicated programming from Fox Sports Radio with some local sports talk and game coverage. Its daytime signal reaches as far north as Ft. Pierce, as far west as Ft. Myers and Naples, and as far south as Cuba. The station has managed to score ratings in the Ft. Myers-Naples radio market despite its transmitter being over 100 miles away. WINZ's studios are located in the iHeartMedia complex in Miramar and the transmitter site is in Miami Gardens. The station was originally a 3-tower directional day with 46,000 watts to protect the FCC monitoring station just to the north. Gannett management was successful in having the FCC monitoring stations moved to Vero Beach, which opened up the station for increased power. WZTU
WZTU (94.9 FM) is a radio station in the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale radio market. Owned and operated by iHeartMedia, its studios are located in iHeartMedia complex in Rivera Blvd in Miramar and the transmitter site is in Miami Gardens. The station plays a Spanish top-40 format, mixed with some English top 40 songs. WZTU is licensed by the FCC to broadcast in the HD Radio (hybrid) format. History WQAM-FM signed on the air in 1947, owned by the ''Miami Herald''. It was a full-time simulcast with WQAM. In 1957, when Storz Broadcasting purchased WQAM, the FM signal was taken off the air, and the license returned to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), as Storz was not interested in FM at that time. A new station went on the air in 1962, with 81,000 watts under the WAEZ calls. It was the first station in Miami to broadcast continuously in stereo. Victor Winz
Viktor (Víctor) Winz (31 August 1906 – date of death unknown) was a Palestine/Israeli–Argentine chess master. Born in Germany, he began his chess career in Berlin. He emigrated to Palestine (then under the British Mandate) in the early 1930s. Winz played for the Palestine team in two Chess Olympiads; at fourth board (+2 -9 =2) in the 6th Olympiad at Warsaw 1935, and at third board (+4 -6 =5) in the 8th Olympiad at Buenos Aires 1939. In September 1939, when World War II broke out, Winz, along with many other participants of the 8th Chess Olympiad, decided to stay permanently in Argentina. In 1941, he took 7th in Buenos Aires (Miguel Najdorf won, followed by Moshe Czerniak, Hermann Pilnik, Paul Michel, etc.).
