WHDH-TV Tower
The WHDH-TV tower is a free-standing lattice tower with a triangular cross section located in the Newton Upper Falls section of Newton, Massachusetts. It built in 1960 by RKO General and is currently owned by Sunbeam Television, which uses it to transmit its Boston television stations, WHDH (TV), WHDH (channel 7) and WLVI (channel 56), which shares WHDH's channel spectrum. It was originally built for RKO-owned WNAC-TV (Boston), WNAC-TV, the original occupant of channel 7, until it surrendered its license in May 1982 due to long-standing issues with its parent company, when the tower and studio assets were transferred to the new channel 7 licensee. The tower stands tall and would have been the third tallest free-standing tower in the world at the time of its construction after Tokyo Tower and the Eiffel Tower. Continental Tire the Americas, LLC, d.b.a. General Tire, is an American manufacturer of tires for motor vehicles. Founded in 1915 in Akron, Ohio by William Francis O'Neil, Winfred E. In the broadcasting industry, an owned-and-operated station (frequently abbreviated as an O&O) usually refers to a television or radio station owned by the network with which it is associated. This distinguishes such a station from an affiliate, which is independently owned and carries network programming by contract. The concept of an O&O is clearly defined in the United States and Canada (and to some extent, several other countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Japan), where network-owned stations had historically been the exception rather than the rule. The Westinghouse Broadcasting Company, also known as Group W, was the broadcasting division of Westinghouse Electric Corporation. It owned several radio and television stations across the United States and distributed television shows for syndication. Westinghouse Broadcasting was formed in the 1920 as Westinghouse Radio Stations, Inc. It was renamed Westinghouse Broadcasting Company in 1954, and adopted the ''Group W'' moniker on May 20, 1963.
