WFMA (102.9 FM broadcasting, FM) is an American radio station city of license, licensed to serve Marion, Alabama, United States. The station, which began regular broadcast operations in 1991, is currently owned by the Educational Media Foundation. History This station received its original construction permit from the Federal Communications Commission on March 2, 1988 in radio, 1988, for a new 3,000 watt station broadcasting at 102.9 MHz in Linden, Alabama. The new station was assigned the call letters WBAN by the FCC on September 18, 1989. The callsign was quickly changed to WNPT-FM on November 28, 1989. WNPT-FM received its broadcast license, license to cover from the FCC on February 23, 1993. In March 1997, original owners Linden Radio Joint Venture reached an agreement to sell this station to Willis Broadcasting Corporation. Marion, Alabama
Marion is a city in, and the county seat of, Perry County, Alabama, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population of the city is 3,686, up 4.8% over 2000. First known as Muckle Ridge, the city was renamed for a hero of the American Revolution, Francis Marion. Two colleges, Judson College and Marion Military Institute, are located in Marion. Programming As WAJO, the station aired an urban contemporary music format until the late-2000 ownership and callsign change. As WJUS, this station aired a community-oriented Gospel music format from 2001 until Summer 2008. Effective radiated power (ERP), synonymous with equivalent radiated power, is an IEEE standardized definition of directional radio frequency (RF) power, such as that emitted by a radio transmitter. It is the total power in watts that would have to be radiated by a half-wave dipole antenna to give the same radiation intensity (signal strength or power flux density in watts per square meter) as the actual source antenna at a distant receiver located in the direction of the antenna's strongest beam (main lobe). ERP measures the combination of the power emitted by the transmitter and the ability of the antenna to direct that power in a given direction. Height above average terrain (HAAT), or (less popularly) effective height above average terrain (EHAAT), is the vertical position of an antenna site is above the surrounding landscape. HAAT is used extensively in FM radio and television, as it is more important than effective radiated power (ERP) in determining the range of broadcasts ( VHF and UHF in particular, as they are line of sight transmissions). For international coordination, it is officially measured in meters, even by the Federal Communications Commission in the United States, as Canada and Mexico have extensive border zones where stations can be received on either side of the international boundaries. Air1 is an American Christian radio network. Owned by the Educational Media Foundation (EMF), it primarily broadcasts contemporary worship music, and is a sister to the EMF's K-Love network. History In 1986, KLRD began broadcasting Christian Hit/Rock music from Yucaipa, California, and went by the on-air moniker K-LORD. In 1994, KXRD was started as a sister station to KLRD.
