WETM-TV (channel 18) is a television station in Elmira, New York, United States, affiliated with NBC and owned by Nexstar Media Group. The station's studios are located on East Water Street in downtown Elmira, and its transmitter is located on Hawley Hill in Big Flats, New York. However, master control and some internal operations are based at Springfield, Massachusetts–licensed Nexstar sister station and fellow NBC affiliate WWLP's studios in Chicopee, Massachusetts, Chicopee. History Prior use of channel 18 The first user of channel 18 in Elmira was its second station, WECT, which was operated by El-Cor Television, a joint venture of the ''Corning Leader'' and the ''Elmira Star-Gazette''. The station only operated for less than a year, from September 30, 1953, to May 27, 1954. El-Cor surrendered the station's license in September. Elmira () is a city and the county seat of Chemung County, New York, United States. It is the principal city of the Elmira, New York, metropolitan statistical area, which encompasses Chemung County. The population was 26,523 at the 2020 census, down from 29,200 at the 2010 census, a decline of more than 7 percent. Smith Media
Smith Media, LLC, successor to Smith Television aka Sunrise Television, was a broadcasting group co-based in Los Angeles, California and St. Petersburg, Florida, that formerly owned and operated several television stations across the United States. In 1986, it bought the three smaller television stations from publishing company Times Mirror Company. In 2002, Sunrise sold six of the stations to LIN Television. Smith Television became Smith Media, LLC in 2004 at the death of Bob Smith, head of the family run organization. The family decided to re-capitalize their stations and sold the stations to Boston Ventures, which created Smith Media. The similarities in names have created much confusion. During the early 2010s, Smith Media sold off its stations; on October 1, 2013, Smith Media reached a deal to sell its last remaining station, WKTV in Utica, New York, to Heartland Media, a company owned by former Gray Television executive Bob Prather, pending FCC approval. WSTM-TV (channel 3) is a television station in Syracuse, New York, United States, affiliated with NBC and The CW. It is owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group, which provides certain services to CBS affiliate WTVH (channel 5) through a local marketing agreement with Granite Broadcasting. Both stations share studios on James Street/New York State Route 290, NY 290 in the Near Northeast, Syracuse, New York, Near Northeast section of Syracuse, while WSTM-TV's transmitter is located in the town of Onondaga, New York. History The station began operations on February 15, 1950 with the call sign WSYR-TV. It was owned by Advance Publications (the Newhouse family's company) along with the ''Syracuse Post-Standard'', ''Syracuse Herald-Journal'', and WSYR radio (WSYR (AM), AM 570 and FM 94.5, now WYYY).
